Introduction
"Blackwing", known as "Black Feather" in the Japanese version, is an archetype of DARK (and one LIGHT) Winged Beast-Type (and one Warrior) monsters making their debut in "Crimson Crisis". In the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime, they are used by Crow Hogan and Robert Pearson, Crow inheriting the Deck from the latter. As far as looks, the "Blackwing" monsters generally have a very birdlike appearance, but seems to be more humanoid in the Level 4 and above monsters. Also, most of "Blackwing" monsters feature black in their design, usually on their wing feathering. Most are named after types of wind and air currents, except for the manga version, who are named after weapons instead.
Archtype Cards :
Blackwing - Abrolhos the Megaquake :
Cannot be Special Summoned. This card cannot destroy monsters by battle. If this card battles a monster, after damage calculation:
Return that monster to the hand. Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1: You can have this card lose exactly 1000 ATK, and if you do,
return all cards in your opponent's Spell & Trap Zone to the hand
Blackwing - Aurora the Northern Lights :
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 2 face-up monsters you control (1 "Blackwing"
Tuner and 1 non-Tuner) and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. Once per turn: You can banish 1 "Blackwing" Synchro Monster from
your Extra Deck; until the End Phase, this card's name and original ATK become that monster's, and replace this effects with that
monster's original effects.
Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North :
Cannot be Special Summoned. When this card is Normal Summoned: You can target 1 Level 4 or lower "Blackwing" monster in your
Graveyard; Special Summon that target in Defense Position.
Blackwing - Bora the Spear :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Bora the Spear", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If
this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent.
Blackwing - Boreas the Sharp :
During your Main Phase 1: You can banish this card from the Graveyard, then target 1 "Blackwing" monster you control; if that monster
attacks this turn, you take no battle damage from that attack, it is not destroyed by that battle, also destroy the opponent's monster
that it battled, after damage calculation.
Blackwing - Breeze the Zephyr :
If this card is added from your Deck to your hand by the card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. Cannot be used
as a Synchro Material, except for the Synchro Summon of a "Blackwing" monster.
Blackwing - Brisote the Tailwind :
If 2 or more face-up "Blackwing" monsters you control were destroyed this turn, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If
this card is sent to the Graveyard as a Synchro Material: Gain 600 LP.
Blackwing - Calima the Haze :
During your opponent's Battle Phase, if you control no monsters: You can banish this card from the Graveyard, then target 1 Synchro
Monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target, but banish it at the end of the Battle Phase (this is a Quick Effect).
Blackwing - Damascus the Polar Night :
During either player's turn: You can discard this card to target 1 "Blackwing" monster you control; it gains 500 ATK until the End
Phase.
Blackwing - Elphin the Raven :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. When this card is Normal Summoned: You can
target 1 monster your opponent controls; change that target's battle position.
Blackwing - Etesian of Two Swords :
If a "Blackwing" monster you control battles an opponent's monster, and your opponent still controls that monster at the end of the
Damage Step: You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard; inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.
Blackwing - Fane the Steel Chain :
This card can attack your opponent directly. If this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent by a direct attack: Target 1 Attack
Position monster your opponent controls; change that target to Defense Position.
Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; that target's ATK and DEF become half its current ATK and DEF.
Blackwing - Ghibli the Searing Wind :
When your opponent declares a direct attack: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn: You can switch the
original ATK and DEF of this card, until the end of this turn.
Blackwing - Gladius the Midnight Sun :
If the only face-up monster you control is 1 "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Gladius the Midnight Sun", you can Special
Summon this card (from your hand). Once per turn, this card cannot be destroyed by battle.
Blackwing - Gust the Backblast :
If you control no cards, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If your opponent's monster attacks a "Blackwing" monster
you control, the attacking monster loses 300 ATK during the Damage Step only.
Blackwing - Hillen the Tengu-wind :
When you take 2000 or more Battle Damage from your opponent's monster's direct attack while this card is in the Graveyard, you can
select 1 Level 3 or lower "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard. Special Summon that monster and this card from the Graveyard. Their
effects are negated. Each player can only use the effect of "Blackwing - Hillen the Tengu-wind" once per Duel.
Blackwing - Hurricane the Tornado :
Once per turn: You can target 1 Synchro Monster on the field; this card's ATK becomes that monster's current ATK, until the end of
this turn.
Blackwing - Jetstream the Blue Sky :
During damage calculation, you can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard to prevent a "Blackwing" monster you control from
being destroyed by this battle.
Blackwing - Jin the Rain Shadow :
If this card battles with a monster with DEF equal to or less than this card's ATK, destroy that monster immediately with this card's
effect (without applying damage calculation).
Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow :
During either player's Damage Step, when a "Blackwing" monster you control is attacking or being attacked: You can send this card from
your hand to the Graveyard; that monster gains 1400 ATK until the end of this turn.

If this card was Special Summoned, it cannot be used as a Synchro Material.
Blackwing - Kogarashi the Wanderer :
When a face-up "Blackwing" monster you control is destroyed by a card effect and sent to the Graveyard (except during the Damage
Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand. When a monster is Synchro Summoned using this card as a Synchro Material, the
opponent of this card's owner cannot activate cards or effects.
Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn", you can Special Summon this card (from your
hand). You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn" once per turn this way. Once per turn, this card cannot be
destroyed by Spell/Trap effects.
Blackwing - Mistral the Silver Shield :
If this card on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: Reduce the next battle damage you would take this turn to 0.
Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall" once per turn this way. If this card is sent to the Graveyard as a Synchro
Material Monster: You can target 1 monster on the field; change that target's battle position.
Blackwing - Pinaka the Waxing Moon :
Cannot be used as a Synchro Material, except for the Synchro Summon of a "Blackwing" monster. During the End Phase, if this card is in
the Graveyard because it was sent there from the field this turn: You can add 1 "Blackwing" monster from your Deck to your hand,
except "Blackwing - Pinaka the Waxing Moon". You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Pinaka the Waxing Moon" once per turn.
Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame :
When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 "Blackwing" monster
with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck, but its effects are negated.
Blackwing - Sirocco the Dawn :
If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon/Set this card without Tributing. Once per turn,
during your Main Phase 1: You can target 1 "Blackwing" monster you control; until the end of this turn, it gains ATK equal to the
total ATK of all "Blackwing" monsters currently on the field, except itself. Monsters other than the targeted monster cannot attack
during the turn you activate this effect.
Blackwing - Steam the Cloak :
If this face-up card leaves the field: Special Summon 1 "Steam Token" (Aqua-Type/WIND/Level 1/ATK 100/DEF 100). If this card is in
your Graveyard: You can Tribute 1 monster; Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing -
Steam the Cloak" once per Duel. If this card Summoned this way is used as a Synchro Material Monster, all other Synchro Material
Monsters must be "Blackwing" monsters.
Blackwing - Vayu the Emblem of Honor :
This face-up card on the field cannot be used as a Synchro Material. If this card is in the Graveyard: You can target 1 non-Tuner
"Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard; banish both this card and that target, and if you do, Special Summon 1 "Blackwing" Synchro
Monster from your Extra Deck whose Level equals the total Levels of the banished monsters, but its effects are negated.
Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite :
If this card is in your Graveyard: You can return 1 face-up card you control to the hand; Special Summon this card, and if you do,
take 400 damage. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite" once per Duel.
Blackwing - Gram the Shining Star :
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Must first be Synchro Summoned. When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower non-Tuner "Blackwing"
monster from your hand. Its effects are negated.
Blackwing - Nothung the Starlight :
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Special Summoned: Inflict 800 damage to your opponent, then make 1 monster your opponent controls lose 800 ATK and
DEF. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Nothung the Starlight" once per turn. During your Main Phase, you can Normal Summon
1 "Blackwing" monster in addition to your Normal Summon/Set. (You can only gain this effect once per turn.)
Blackwing - Silverwind the Ascendant :
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can target up to 2 face-up monsters on the field with DEF lower than this card's ATK; destroy
those targets. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect. During each of your opponent's turns, the first
"Blackwing" monster you control that would be destroyed by battle, is not destroyed.
Blackwing Armed Wing :
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, it gains 500 ATK during the Damage Step only, also inflict piercing battle damage to
your opponent.
Blackwing Armor Master :
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Cannot be destroyed by battle, and you take no battle damage from attacks involving this card. At the end of the Damage Step, if this
card attacked a monster: You can place 1 Wedge Counter on that monster (max. 1). You can remove all Wedge Counters from your
opponent's monsters; the ATK and DEF of those monsters that had Wedge Counters become 0 until the end of this turn.
Blackwing Tamer - Hawk Joe the Jet Black :
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more "Blackwing" non-Tuner monsters
You can target 1 Level 5 or higher Winged Beast-Type monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. During either player's turn, when
your opponent targets exactly this card (and no other cards) for an attack, or with a card effect: You can target 1 other "Blackwing"
monster you control that would be an appropriate target; that attack/effect now targets the new target. You can only use each effect
of "Blackwing Tamer - Hawk Joe the Jet Black" once per turn.
Black Whirlwind :
When a "Blackwing" monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 "Blackwing" monster from your Deck to your hand
with less ATK than that monster.
Cards for Black Feathers :
Banish 1 "Blackwing" monster from your hand; draw 2 cards. You cannot Special Summon during the turn you activate this card. You can
only activate 1 "Cards for Black Feathers" per turn.
Black Sonic :
When an opponent's monster declares an attack on a "Blackwing" monster you control: Banish all face-up Attack Position monsters your
opponent controls. If you control exactly 3 "Blackwing" monsters (and no other monsters), you can activate this card from your hand.
Delta Crow - Anti Reverse :
If you control a "Blackwing" monster: Destroy all face-down Spell and Trap Cards your opponent controls. If you control exactly 3
"Blackwing" monsters, you can activate this card from your hand.
Blackwing - Backlash :
When an opponent declares a direct attack while you have 5 or more "Blackwing" monsters in your Graveyard: Destroy all monsters your
opponent controls.
Blackwing - Bomardment :
Tribute 1 "Blackwing" monster to select 1 face-up Synchro Monster you control. That Synchro Monster gains ATK equal to the Tributed
monster's ATK, until the End Phase.
Blackwing - Boobytrap :
When this Set card is destroyed by your opponent's card effect while you control a face-up "Blackwing" monster, inflict 1000 damage to
your opponent and draw 1 card.

Playing style
"Blackwing" Decks focus on swarming. Because of that, they have an aggressive playing style. Also, because of their swarming capabilities, they give many opportunities to Synchro Summon (note that their trump cards are Synchro Monsters) and Xyz Summon. Their support cards rely on their swarm abilities such as "Delta Crow - Anti Reverse", and "Black Sonic", which can both be activated from the hand when you control exactly 3 "Blackwing" monsters. Some of them take an advantage from “Blackwings” swarming abilities and support it such as "Black Whirlwind". With the overwhelming amount of near forced synergy and powerful support cards, “Blackwings” are one of the easiest archetypes to play. This along with its overall power and relatively low cost nature made "Blackwings" one of the most powerful archetypes in the metagame.
Weaknesses
"Blackwings" have some problems maintaining hand and field advantage due to the overwhelming speed with which “Blackwings” are Summoned, a player can (and often will) find his/her hand depleting quickly, thus lacking resources in case his/her plans goes wrong,
(such as in the case the opponent counters a massive Swarming with a mass-destruction card like "Torrential Tribute" or "Dark Hole"); however, with "Black Whirlwind" now unlimited again to ensure the player can always keep monsters in their hand, this situation will happen much less. Cards such as "Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror" may hurt the player a little as you will not be able to use your effects, and "Dimensional Fissure" will render "Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame", "Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow", "Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North" and "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite"'s effects useless. However, all of these threats are easily solved with "Icarus
Attack" or "Diamond Dire Wolf", as all of the monsters are Winged-Beasts. "Royal Decree" may pose a problem as it will render "Icarus Attack" useless, but it's also easily dealt with using "Diamond Dire Wolf".
