Pretty much any 1st or 2nd party Nintendo games have potential for their main characters to be in. 3 3rd party characters have already been confirmed so it is unlikely that any more will pop up. There is quite a lot of hype about specific potential characters, both veteran and newcomer, so I'll include detail on these here.
Some say "He's too big." Others say "Your mom said I was too big!" Ridley has this swarm of hype following him about on the internet in SSB4 topics, and nintendo are fully aware of this in how they have dumped his shadow on a stage to imply he is a stage hazard and will not be playable. To some, this is proof he isn't in, whereas other people say that's just Sakurai fucking with you. If you don't know him, he's a space pirate dragon thing that ate Samus' mother and is a recurring boss in Metroid games.
People who want more Donkey Kong representation are split two ways. King K. Rool is the bad guy of early DK games, but recently he's been pretty much forgotten. The fans want a revival. However, Dixie Kong is another potential rep for the DK franchise, and has actually appeared in a recent DK game, perhaps making them more likely. Most people would suggest that it's going to be one or the other of these characters in the final roster, but it is theoretically possible to see both.
Despite both characters being veterans, neither has been announced. If you ask me, this isn't much of a debate, as they're both likely to be put in the final roster, espcially considering that Ness has perfect attendance. There's arguments about recent games and stuff, but I wouldn't worry about that too much.
In brawl, he was basically a Captain Falcon clone. The fanbase wants a new moveset. With a SWORD! Yeeeah! That pretty much sums up any hype on this guy.
No explanation required. Instead, I would write an email to Sakurai begging for mewtwo, but he must have got countless numbers of those. Mewtwo wasn't in brawl and that killed something in the hearts of every true nintendo fan.
The infamous "Gematsu Leak" is a source that has correctly predicted a large number of newcomer characters. So far, 8 out of 11 characters it has predicted have been announced. These predictions were, in no specific order:
Wii Fit Trainer (difficult to guess)
"Animal Crossing Guy" (actually called villager)
"Pokemon from X/Y" (Greninja)
Palutena
Pacman
Megaman
Little Mac
Miis
The other 3 predictions were:
Chrom
People want chrom. Chrom would be the 3rd Fire Emblem character, and considering how FREAKING AWESOME he is it's quite likely.
Shulk
Xenoblade Chronicles is a first party nintendo game and it would be a shame if it didn't get representation.
Chorus Men
Another "WTF" character, potentially Based on the wording, this would be all 3 of these guys from rhythm heaven.
They have bow ties and they're vaguely popular as an internet meme. Go figure.
Professor Layton
He would be awesome and there is a vague amount of support for him. How wouldn't this work?
Geno
People wanted him in brawl. He's still not very likely.
