The imaginary number i serves as purpose for the impossible to rationally displayable square root of -1. It's impossible to logically solve that since sqrt(-1) would imply that there is a variable x that, mulitplied by itself would result in -1. That, however, is not possible since two variables with the same calculating operation (positive or negative) ALWAYS equals a positive number which cannot equal -1.

Atoms are made of sub-atomic parts, protons, electrons and neutrons. Which is ironic since the Greek word atomos means individable, which it is.

Now, those protons and electrons are made of each 2 2/3+ quarks and 1 2/3- quark and vice versa, respectably. A proton contains above mentioned quarks.
