Its a stupid question but how does the chat work here? because I'm not particularly used to using forums and I don't know how to talk to anyone outside of the threads.

Go onto the chat part, click log out and log in, just sorted i out for me.

Bottom of page -> Join the Chat or just use the popup chat in lower right corner.

Usually you only need to 'Log-in'. However, forumotion is having a problem with their chatbox and they're working to fix it. So for now, It's as you said, you need to 'log-out' before you can 'log-in'.
