LESSON 25
The Battle Phase

The battle phase is considered to be one of the most confusing aspects of the game. This is mainly due to the many steps and sub-steps it contains in addition to rulings for what can and can't be used during those steps. In total, the battle phase contains 12 steps. Your objective for this lesson is to breakdown the battle phase. You will make a post naming every step and sub-step that the battle phase contains, and you will give a detailed explanation of what can and can't be used in each step. Next, you will have to apply the knowledge of the battle phase that you just displayed and answer two essay questions.

Essay Question #1

Yugi has a face up attack position Mystical Elf, and he
has Honest in his hand. Kaiba has a face up attack position Blue-Eyes White Dragon and also has Honest in his hand. It is Yugi's turn and he is aware of the fact that Kaiba also has Honest in his hand. Yugi wants to attack and kill Blue-Eyes this turn. What can Yugi do to ensure that his Honest "Wins"?

Essay Question #2

Chazz has a faceup Evolzar Laggia(with 2 unused xyz material) and Joey has a faceup Flame Swordsman. Chazz proceeds to attack Flame Swordsman with his Laggia. During the Damage Step, Joey activates Forbidden Lance targeting Laggia. Chazz says "negate" and detaches his 2 materials from Laggia. However, Joey says that Chazz can't use that effect during the Damage Step. Is Joey right? Why or why not?

Before you respond, please read the Classroom Rules here.

Question #1

The first Honest activated in a damage step will always win. That's so because a chain resolves backwards, so the first Honest will be put as chain link 1, the second as chain link 2.
So what Yugi has to do is attack BEWD with Mystical Elf, in the damage step he has the priority as the turn player, so he will activate Honest, then let's say Kaiba activates his. Blue-Eyes goes from 3000 -> 3800 when his Honest resolves, and then Yugi's Mystical Elf's attack will skyrocket to 800+3800 (as it gains the attack of the opposing monster, not its original attack) = 4600.

Question #2

Yes, Chazz can negate it, a player can activate in the damage step attack modifiers (like Forbidden Lance), Counter Traps, effects that state specifically that they can be activated in the damage step (i.e. Neo-Spacian Grand Mole) AND Quick Effects that NEGATE other cards.

You didn't answer the first part. Answer it all or don't post here. And your answer for #1 is incorrect.

I can't seem to find why my #1 is incorrect, so I won't even bother with the first part (which I totally overlooked by the way, sorry Razz)

It's incorrect because simply using Honest in the damage step does not ensure that it will win. It could give you the win, but it is dependent on what your opponent does. There is something you can do that allows 100% chance of Yugi's Honest winning and it wouldn't matter what Kaiba does. If I explain any further I'll be revealing the answer so that is all I can tell you.

case i though it was an introduction or something ._. ... try highlighting it :I

break down of the battle phase:

start step
this is when you declare that yoiu are eantering the battle phase itself, at this moment turn player retain priority and can activate traps and quickplay spells, but is not needded to attack if you enter

battle step

this is where real action develope, it is entered by declering an attack

attack declaration

this is the step you are when you declare and attack ( you know, the little sword pops up and move to target) and where many people hold their breath

at this step you andyour opponent can activate spell speed 2 cards that meets timing, or can be simply activated (jar of greed, mirror force, MST) as always, turn player have his precius priority. if turn player pass priority, then its opponent turn to activate whatever it have, if he pass his priority too, cards that resolve at attack declaration cannot be activate

btw, if you entered here, the monster alredy declared an attack, nomatter if its attack is negated or not

before the damage step

here is where cards wich effects activate before the damage step but don t need toio be activated in response to attack declaration

Damage step

this is the part where atack meets defense and defense meets attack. during the damage step only ceartain cards can be activated, and those out of the list cant be activatted at all

  1. Counter Trap Cards

  2. Spell Speed 2 Effects that alter the atk/def of monsters

  3. Effects that specify activation timings within the Damage Step
  4. quick effs (Multi-Trigger) Monster Effects that negate (and only negate) the activation of a card/effect

  5. "Attack and Receive", "Chthonian Blast", "Desrook Archfiend", "Michizure", "Null and Void", and "Numinous Healr"
start of the damage step

preparations for monster clashing begins, at this step, continius effects are activated that applies at this step , then trigger effects that activates at this time, then you can activate effects that decreese or incresee atk and def

flipping the bi- monster

this is where you flip the face down monster to face up, wich can surprise you for good or bad...

whatever your logic tells you, in this step flip effects are not activated nor trigger effect that activates when the card is flipped face up... but continius eff do activate

here too you can activate effect that decreese or increse attack of a monster

before damage calculation

this is where most battle releted effect activaytes and where flip effect activates too, if therees still a target on the field and attack was not negated
it goes onto damage calculation. in this step you can have multiple chains so you can just wait for effects to resolve, then activate and start another chain

and this is where most effect of incrising/decrising attact and defense activates

is an effect state that damage calculation is not applied, the duels move to resolve effect step at the end of this step

during damage calculation

in this step only cards
effect with effect that state that theiur eff is activated during damage calculation are activated (injection lady, honest [even though its not specifically stated]) and the one that negates them

there can only be one chain on this step and if a monster is destroyed on this step, it is not considered destroyed by battle, but by a card effect

after damage calculation

this is where battle damage is calculated and inflicted and if a facedown monster had a self destruct effect that can be resolved durig all the damage step and it survived the battle, it is destroyed by its own effect

at this step is where effect that activate after taking damage are activated

resolve effect

this is thepart where flip effect and trigger effect that activate after damage calculation is activated and continius effect of monster that where defeted by battle no longer applies, but they still go wherever their effect dictate they go when the condition is met

end of the damage step

this is when those defeted by battle are sent to the grave and the effect of those wich activate after being destroyed by battle activates and start a chain, and after all is said and done you can go back to the battle step if you have another monster on the field

end step

the step where the batttle phase ends, here players can activate quick play spells, monster effect that state so and traps cards. this is the home of gladiators beast monsters

eassy anwers

#1 attack, and on damage calculationn call priority and activate, since
there can only be one chain on dc, he cant wait to honest to resolve to
activate his own, and he would lose his dragon

#2 quick effect

Essay Question #1
Yugi can attack Blue-Eyes White Dragon with Mystical Elf and wait until damage calculation. During damage calculation, because Yugi is the turn player, he gets the first chance to activate a card effect. Yugi should then activate Honest's effect. There can be only one chain during damage calculation, so if Kaiba wanted to activate the effect of his own Honest he would have to chain it. If he did so, his Honest's effect would resolve first, increasing the ATK of Blue-Eyes White Dragon by Mystical Elf's ATK of 800 to 3800. Then Yugi's Honest's effect would resolve. The ATK of Mystical Elf would increase by Blue-Eyes White Dragon's ATK of 3800 to 4600. If Kaiba does not use his Honest, Yugi's Honest's effect will resolve, increasing the ATK of Mystical Elf to 3800. Either way, Mystical Elf destroys Blue-Eyes White Dragon by battle and inflicts 800 damage to Kaiba, but if Kaiba knows his rulings he won't waste his Honest. Yugi's Honest "wins."

Essay Question #2
Among the types of card effects that can be activated during the Damage Step is Quick Effects that negate other effects. Evolzar Laggia's effect negates another card effect, and is therefore also a Quick Effect. Joey is wrong. Chazz can negate Forbidden Lance with Evolzar Laggia's effect.

The Battle Phase can be broken down as follows:

1. The Start Step: This is where the player declares they have entered the Battle Phase, can declare attacks or simply skip to Main Phase 2.
2.Battle Step. This is further broken down into Sub-Steps:
-3. Start or Attack Declaration. Choosing which monster is attacking what.
-4. Pre-Damage Step. This is where cards that need to activate outside of attacks can be activated.
5.Damage Step. This step is a series of events that decide the outcome of the battle. It also is divded into Sub-Steps.
-6. Start of the damage step.
-7. Flipping the face-down monster face up, if necessary.
-8. Before Damage Calculation, this is where Honest comes in.
-9. During Damage Calculation, where we compare the Atk/Def of the battling monsters to determine the winner of the battle and the damage.
-10. Battle Damage/After Damage Calculation. This is the part where we actually subtract the damage inflicted.
-11. Resolve effects, such as Flip Effect monsters.
-12. End of damage calculation. This is when monsters are normally sent to the graveyard after being destroyed by battle.

Exam #1: If Yugi were to hold off on using Honest until During Damage Calculation, then Kaiba has no way to save his Dragon. Even if he were to chain his own Honest first, Yugi's Honest will resolve second, giving ithe 3000 from Blue-Eyes and the boost it got from Kaiba's Honest.

Exam #2 : Evolzar Laggia's effect is a Quick Effect, which can in fact activate in the Damage Calculation, same as a Quick-Play Spell card. Joey is wrong in this case.

Start Phase On this Phase you can-

1.The Turn player now declares that he/she is entering the Battle Phase. 2.The Turn player has priority to activate Spell Speed 2 cards now. 3.Then decide if conducting battle. Note: entering Battle Phase doesn't mean you have to declare attacks. If you do not, go straight to End of Battle Phase

Next is the Battle Phase

1.Durring this step the Turn player must declare that he/she is entering the Battle Phase.

Next Start Attack Declaration-

1.The Turn player has priority to activate Spell Speed 2 cards now, but they do not have to, and respond to the attack declaration. 2.When an attack is declared, the Turn Player may retain priority to activate effects. At this time he/she is free to activate cards that perform an action when a monster attacks, or any other effect with timing he/she can meet. 3.If the Turn Player decides that he/she will pass, the opponent is given an oppertunity to activate effects that respond to the attack such as Sakuretsu Armor, Mirror Force, and so on, or any other effects with timing he/she can meet. 4.If the Turn Player passes, and the opponent passes as well, the chance to activate cards like Sakuretsu Armor, Mirror Force, Magic Cylinder, and so on is GONE, Dont Forget.

Now Before Damage Phase-

1.Cards that don't need to be activated in direct response to the attack declaration, but before the Damage Step, can/may be activated now. Note, that multiple chains can be created before players agree to enter Damage Step.

Now for the Damage Phase-

This (in my opinion) is the most missed phaseonly because people combind it with the Start Attack Declaration.

1.The Damage Phase is composed of a series of small overlooked events. 2.The start of the Damage Phase, flipping the face-down attacked monster face-up, damage calculation, inflicting Battle Damage, activating the Flip Effect of the flipped monster, and sending a monster destroyed by battle to the Graveyard are Separate Events that all happen during the Same Damage Phase. 3.Also The Damage Phase has specific rules that govern what can/cannot be activated. Some cards can not be activated at all, while others can Only be activated during very specific events that occur within the Damage Phase- I. Counter Trap Cards such as Seven Tools of the Bandit, and Dark Bribe II. Spell Speed 2 Effects that alter the ATK/DEF of monsters like Rush Recklessly III. Effects that specify activation timings within the Damage Phase like Nutrient Z, and Jain, Lightsworn Paladin IV.Quick Effect, Multi-Trigger, Monster Effects that negate and only negate the activation of a card/effect

Next onto the Sub-Phases

Sub-Phase 1: Start of the Damage PhaseLesson #25[SOLVED BY TRAIN] YH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3D-

1.First, apply the Continuous Effects of monsters at this time, like Steamroid, Rampaging Rhynos, Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger, and Jain, Lightsworn Paladin. 2.Next, activate the Trigger Effects of monsters that activate at this time, like Neo-Spacian Grand Mole, and the Mystic Swordsman cards. I.Most of these effects destroy a battling monster. If a battling monster is destroyed, it is not flipped face-up so you do not activate Flip Effects and you do not perform Damage Calculation. II.If such a monster is face-down, its effect can not be activated and you perform Damage Calculation normally. 3.Effects that increase, decrease, halve, or double the ATK/DEF of a monster can be activated at this time, this includes cards like Shrink, Limiter Removal, Rush Recklessly, Rising Energy, and Mirror Wall.

Now its time for Sub-Phase 2: Flipping the Face-Down Monster Face-UpLesson #25[SOLVED BY TRAIN] YH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3D

1.If the monster being attacked is face-down, it is flipped face-up at this time. 2.If the monster being attacked is face-down, it is flipped face-up at this time. If the monster has a Flip Effect/Trigger Effect that activates when it is flipped face-up, the effect will not activate at this time unless otherwise stated by the card text. 3.If a monster is flipped and it has a Continuous Effect, then you apply the Continuous Effect, this includes the Continuous Effects of monsters like Jinzo, and Spell Canceller that apply as long as the monster is face-up on the field. 4.Effects that increase, decrease, halve, or double the ATK/DEF of a monster can be activated at this time.

Now for Sub-Phase 3: Before Damage Calculation-

1.Lesson #25[SOLVED BY TRAIN] YH5BAEAAAEALAAAAAABAAEAQAICTAEAOw%3D%3DThe effects of cards like Drillroid and Ehren, Lightsworn Monk activate at this time, after the face-down monster has been flipped face-up and before damage has been calculated. 2.Cards like Blast Sphere, Adhesive Explosive, and Ancient Lamp have effects that activate when they are flipped face-up by an attack and their effects are activated at this time. 3.Also the damage-inflicting effects of Reflect Bounder, Yubel, and Yubel - Terror Incarnate activate at this time. 4.You are allowed to have multiple Chains for the use of activating these types of effects.

Its taking forever but we are now in (expect some slacking) Sub-Phase 4: "During Damage Calculation"-

1.Some effects in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG are applied "during damage calculation" Damage Calculation is a specific event in the Damage Step during which we compare the ATK/DEF of the monsters in battle and inflict Battle Damage. 2.Monsters like this are still destroyed if their ATK/DEF is lower than the Players ATK, the only change is that the attacking Player takes the dammage.

Getting closer (expect more slacking) Sub-Phase 5: Battle Damage - After Damage Calculation-

1.If the flipped monster had a "self-destruct" effect and it has survived the battle, it is destroyed by its effect at this time if its proper field conditions are not met. 2.Lets say you activate Flashbang Immediately after inflicting Battle Damage, Flashbang can be activated before any other effects activate, If Flashbang is activated and resolves properly, then other effects that activate when Battle Damage is inflicted will not be activated.

Ugh just 2 more Sub-Phase 6: Resolve effects-

1.This area deals with the the Flip Effect of the Flip Effect Monster that was flipped face-up by the attack. The Flip Effect of the monster flipped face-up by the attack activate at this time. 2.If the flipped monster had a Trigger Effect that activates when the monster is flipped face-up it will be activated at this time. The Trigger Effects of D.D. Warrior, D.D. Warrior Lady, and D.D. Assailant activate at this time as well. 3.If a monster destroyed by the battle has a Continuous Effect that is applied while the monster is face-up on the field the Continuous Effect is no longer applied. 4.Finaly if the Flip Effect of the flipped monster targets, you can not select a target that has been destroyed during damage calculation.

Finaly the end of the first answer Sub-Phase 7: End of the Damage Step - The Monster Destroyed by Battle are Sent to the Graveyard-

1.Monsters that have been destroyed by battle are now sent to the Graveyard or removed from play if a(n) effect demands it.

Ok now for the Honest one

Yugi attacks the Blue-Eyes White Dragon with Mystical Elf. During damage calculation, he activates the effect of Honest declaring priority. If Kiba wants to activate the effect of his Honest, he would need to chain it. Kiba can not wait until after Yugi's Honest resolves and start another Chain, because when the current Chain finishes resolving damage will be calculated and the timing to activate the effects of cards like Honest will have passed. So if Kiba activates his Honest, his Honest's effect would resolve first. Then Yugis's Mystical Elf would have 800 more ATK than Blue-Eyes White Dragon, destroying Blue-Eyes White Dragon.

Finaly Answer 3

No, Chazz can not negate it, since a player can activate Spell Speed 2 Effects that alter the ATK/DEF of monsters , Counter Traps, Quick Effect or Multi-Trigger Monster Effects that negate and only negate the activation of a card/effect, and since Laggia also destroyies the negated card it can not activate its effect.
