LESSON #24

What to expect from Galactic Overload

Most of the duelists were looking forward for the newest Booster Pack, Galactic Overload to hit the shelves. Containing the infamous Hiearatic Archetype and many more awesomeness, such as rank six monsters and Inzektor support, Galactic Overload surely has a lot to offer.

For this class, you are to analyze the setlist of GAOV and write a detailed commentary about five cards that you decide are important forthe game in general. This importance could include, but is not limited to:

- Card's uniqueness, such as being a card that serves a very different purpose than any other popularly used choises

- Splashability, would this card be an important asset for the users of all sorts of decks.

- Sheer power, the influence the card will have on the balances of the metagame when it's used with its own proper strategy

Some tips I'd be giving you is to take a glance at the last twenty cards, the OCG imports and the TCG exclusives. Try to analayze the current situation we have in the metagme and how it will be altered after GAOV, and which cards in this set are addresing to issues or needs the players had before. Good luck (:

Well, I've been using lightrays on DN, they've sort of got me back into lightsworns.

1. Lightray Daedalus:
Lightray Daedalus has even funnier summoning conditions than judgment dragon; any 4 light monsters in grave and you can inherant summon it. They don't even have to be different. It has 2600 attack, so is a pretty nasty beatstick that's very easily summonable, and what's more, it has a good effect. You can target 1 field spell and 2 other cards, destroy them. Really nasty when your opponent is playing a field spell heavy deck, it's an instant +3 CA. There certainly aren't a lot of cards like this. This, as well as the other lightrays, can go very well in many other light decks. The deck that springs to mind with this card is ancient gears; all 3 cards are destroyed at the same time, so the last thing to happen would be geartown being destroyed so it wouldn't miss timing. This is a better option than settign geartown over the previous one, because it also destroys 2 cards.

2. Lightray diabalos:
Diabalos doesn't have quite as funny summoning conditions as daedalus, but they're still to be laughed at. It's inherant summon requires 5 different light monsters in grave, which is incredibly easy for any good lightsworn deck, and there have been a couple of times where I veliered my opponent just to make up the numbers. It's a 2800 attack beatstick, and its eff allows me to use it like a cheap yata. You can banish 1 light monster from youir grave, target 1 set card your opponent controls. Reveal it, then return it to either the top or bottom of their deck. Naturally, sending defensive traps such as dimensional prison to the top deck every turn stops them from drawing anything, and I just keep killing them. If they don't set anything, then I've just got a clear field to attack in to start with, maybe also summon some other monsters to kill them. This could go well in any light deck; it really helps with hand control as your opponent can't do a thing while you have a 2800 attack monster on the field and they aren't drawing any new cards.

Lightray Gearfried:
I run this card mostly because he's a beatstick that is so awesome if you're in a topdeck situation. Same summoning conditions as Diabalos, he needs 5 different light monsters in grave to inherant summon. The reason he is so good if you're topdecking, is that he has 2800 attack and his ignition effect only works when all your face up monsters are warrior type. Basically, once per turn, while you only control warrior type monsters, you can banish 1 warrior type monster from the grave to negate the activation of a spell or trap card. Sure, using this effect can put you in dangerous situations where cards negate that card and then destroy it, but it's the same for any other effect and its worth trying to stop something that might harm you rather than being scared of the consequences. This would also go well in some elemental hero decks, because there are a lot of light monsters which could easily be sent to grave in some way, and most elemental heros are warriors.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
HSDOoH is a rank 8 XYZ which requires 2 level 8s, and with 3000 attack and an effect that allowsd you to detach 1 material, tribute monsters from your side of the field then destroy an equal number of cards, it's quite strong. The reason I have chosen this card is that although it is for hieratics, it can definitely be used in other decks, which is why I run it in my lightraysworns. The reason is that Lightray gierfried and judgment dragon are both very easily special summoned, and there are times when judgment dragon's effect is either too costly with the 1k LP, or would cause too much damage to your own side of the field. This card will heavily influence the meta, hieratics are already widely used and a card like this is incredibly easy to summon with other cards like hieratic seal. The other point to note about this card in relation to hieratics is that it says "tribute", so all the effects that activate when hieratics are tributed will work, giving out more monsters to overlay with.

Neo galaxy-eyes photon dragon:
Couldn't have missed this one of the list. It's just so awesome, and will probably be used more than sun dragon overlord in hieratic decks. 4500 attack, and it just eats XYZs even more than the original galaxy eyes. It takes 3 level 8 monsters to summon, and has an extra effect if it was summoned using galaxy eyes; negate the effects of all other face up cards on the field. That stops spells, traps, and monsters. And it has 4500 attack. Do that, you pretty much win there and then, unless they have some defensive cards or a solemn judgment or DP. If your opponent has some XYZs, it's even more painful. You detach 1 material, then detach ALL Materials from ALL of your opponent's XYZs, it gains 500 attack for each material detached, then it can attack up to that many times in the battle phase. Basically, let's say your opponent has an XYZ with 2 materials. You get NGEPD, detach, you have 5500 attack and can attack twice. So powerful. I run it for those times when I can use it in my lightraysworn deck, and there'll always be times when something like this could happen, so it's compatible in a sense with any deck running 3 or more level 8s that are the centre of the deck. it is unlikely to influence the meta much, beecause other than hieratics, the current meta has no way to summon 3 level 8 monsters;

Bump.

Alright, here's my analysis:

1. Lightray Sorcerer: This card, while quite similar to the Chaos Sorcerer, has a marked difference. The Lightray can return a banished monster to the deck, meaning that if one's deck is low, that even if there were no other cards in the deck, that person would survive another turn. This card has the potential to work quite well with decks that utilize fairy's like Master Hyperion that removes your own monsters from play and brings them back into the duel without having to use cards like Return from the Different Dimension. Also, any deck that uses LIGHT monsters would benefit from this as he can only come out after 3 monsters of LIGHT have been removed from one's side of the field. Plus, like the Chaos Sorcerer, it removes 1 monster on an opponents side of the field from play, and while he can't attack, it means that, unless that opponent runs a deck that thrives on banished cards, there will be a great advantage. Also the fact that it has 2300 ATK and 2000 DEF doesn't hurt either as he can pack a mean punch.

2. Tatsuke Knight: Now, this card isn't that different from, say, Negate Attack, in that it can end a battle the moment it activates, however, unlike Negate Attack, it works from the grave, and therefore much harder to stop. Even Necrovalley can't stop it, in fact, Necrovalley works perfectly with it, since it only works from the grave and Necrovalley stops cards on the field from affecting the graveyard. This card would work well in decks utilizing Necrovalley such as Gravekeeper decks and others that focus on strategies such as milling one's own deck to activate effects from the graveyard or And, while it can only be used once per duel, it does bring out a new monster without having to do so on one's own turn. And while 1700 ATK isn't much, it can make all the difference when in a tight squeeze, and pave the way for an Xyz or Synchro summon.

3. Queen Dragun Djinn: This card is a bit different from cards like, say, the Lord of D., in that it prevents other Dragons one controls from being destroyed in battle as compared to being affected by magic/trap/monster effects. And it also allows dragons to be special summoned from the grave after detaching an Xyz material. Granted the monster can't attack that turn and it's effect is negated which is a downside but since it can't be destroyed in battle it makes for good material for other things. And it only requires 2 level 4 monsters to be summoned, not even a type or attribute requirement. And it's 2200 ATK is nothing to scoff at.

4. Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger: This guy is similiar to Gaia, the Dragon Champion fusion monster, in terms of offense and defense, however, in addition to its attack power of 2600, it also comes with a nice ability: it can be summoned by using 2 level 7 monsters, or one could use an Xyz monster of rank 5 or 6 and take its material for itself as well as the Xyz monster, which could potentially make three. Now, while the Xyz material does not affect its other ability, they can come in handy if one has taken control of an opponents Xyz monster and can't afford to let them keep it. Gaia's offensive ability is quite dangerous, as it inflicts piercing damage to an opponent when his ATK is higher than the DEF of the other monster. There are currently only 4 altogether that run this type of Xyz summon, which is termed Chaos Xyz Evolution. 2 of them are upgrades of sorts to other Xyz monsters such as C32 Drake Vice and C39 Utopia Ray, but they only work this way with the specified name in the text. The other one is a Constellar Xyz monster and it can be summoned using an Xyz monster only if the monster has Constellar in its name. Gaia is the only one of this type that does not have a limit on what can be used to summon it this way, making it the only true Chaos Xyz Evolution monster out of the four. Gaia Dragon potentially works well in High ranking decks as well as those that utilize higher ranking Xyz monsters.

5. Overlay Owl: This bad boy is quite impressive, while not in points, but ability. It has the power to remove Xyz material once per turn by paying 600 LP to do so. While it only has 800 ATK and 1600 DEF, it works perfectly against monsters such as Heroic Champion Excalibur which has to remove 2 material to activate it's effect which doubles its attack. Without the second it won't work, which is where Overlay owl comes in. There aren't many cards that allow one to remove material from monster one doesn't control, and while Overlay Owl's effect comes at a cost, it can be worth it in the long run when one suddenly finds themselves staring down a Blade Ninja attacking them 2 times in a single turn. Also works well against Utopia in that when it is attacked when it has no Xyz material, it is automatically destroyed without damage calculation, meaning a card like Thousand-Eyes Idol could take it down without getting a single scratch. This card would work well in any anti-Xyz deck, as well as many others where one needs to fight to against Xyz monsters. Also, if someone were running an anti-high level deck, this would work well with cards such as Stumbling and Level Limit - Area B as upon summoning it would go into defense mode. He isn't really needed for attacking, but by whittling down the opponent's Xyz Material, it makes it harder to use their cards to their full advantage.

Lol, did I take up the other lightrays? BTW, lightray sorcerer sucks completely. You need 3 banished light monsters to summon it. That's unlikely unless you run lightray grepher or a macro LS deck; the first is a bit of a fail cos you'd need to discard 3 cards to get the 3 banished, and for the latter there is a reason it doesn't exist.

1. Doom Donuts, because it can destroy Rainbow Dragon and Rocket Arrow Express.
2. Rocket Arrow Express, because if you draw it on your first turn you can summon it straight away.
3. Hieratic Dragon of Eset, because if you have a Level 8 monster on the field and another Hieratic Dragon on the field you can summon Neo Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon.
4. Overlay Eater, because if you have an Xyz on your field the same Rank as one of your opponents Xyz you can power up your Xyz instead of theirs.
5. Swallowtail Butterspy, because if you do 3000 damage to your opponent one of their monsters loses a lot of ATK.

So far I like the comments, but what I'd like to see is that how will these affect the "Top Trio" , or will any cards here help new decks rise in the competition? You've only commentated on the card's usefulness on its own.

1. Hieratic Dragon of Nebthet: This dragon represents half of the Hieratic destruction engine, being able to destroy an opponent's monster by tributing a another Hieratic monster from the hand or field. In addition to clearing the opponent's field of monsters
to enable direct attacks, this also allows one to swarm the field with high level normal dragons to xyz summon powerful monsters like the aces of the Hieratic archetype, Thunder End Dragon for his Dark Hole like effect, the Gimmick Puppet xyz monsters: Numbers 15 and 40 for their respective effects, or, if running Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, his evolution, Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. Nebthet itself is also easily special summoned by tributing a Hieratic monster, allowing the normal summon to be saved for something else. The 2000 ATK score also means it'll be sticking around until you're done with it.

2. Hieratic Dragon of Su: This dragon is the other half of the Hieratic destruction engine, being focused on the destruction of spells and traps. Perfect for getting rid of those pesky Dark Bribes, Mirror Forces, and Dimensional Prisons, among other things. You can also destroy field spells if the opponent relies on them, such as for maintaining Malefic monsters or Earthbound Gods. Used alongside Nebthet, you increase the swarm engine as well. And the 2200 ATK is nothing to sniff at.

3. Hieratic Dragon King of Atum: In addition to being a powerful beatstick with 2400 attack points, Atum can special summon any dragon, not just Hieratics, by giving up an xyz material and his attack for the turn. The summoned Dragon will have zero ATK and DEF, which can be used to swarm even more by comboing this effect with Inferno Reckless Summon. Making it extremely easy to summon rank eight xyz monsters, or if you're running Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, the rank 10 xyz monster known as Gustav Max, the Super Dreadnought Railway Gun, for his 3000 attack points and his ability to shave off a quarter of the opponent's life points via his effect. This makes Atum one of the most splashable dragons around, since he isn't limited to summoning his Hieratic brethren.

4. Numbers 32: Marine Biting Dragon - Shark Drake: This nifty little Numbers monster is perfect for those who love to utterly crush their opponents with merciless attacks. For only three level four monsters, this vicious, bloodthirsty beast can hit the field and attack twice per turn via his effect. Kill an opponent's monster, bring it back with 1000 less ATK, then kill it again for more damage. Run more than one copy of this monster, plus plenty of spell and trap destruction, and you have a recipe for a deck that will be highly aggressive and quite difficult to halt once it gains momentum. Possibly even a part of the meta next format. And since any level four monsters will do, this card fits wonderfully into any deck that loves to swarm and has good level manipulation. And his 2800 ATK is difficult for many lower level monsters to trump, and unless your opponent loves to special summon, they'll have trouble getting something out that can kill him.

5. Numbers 25: Fullmetal Photoglide - Focus Force: Another fascinating Numbers monster. This one is perfect for those who love negation effects. By giving up an xyz material, Focus Force can shut down your opponent's key effects for a turn. Sadly, this effect is limited to monsters level five and above, meaning that things like Shield Wing, Marshmallon, and Spirit Reaper, plus Focus Force's fellow xyz monsters, are immune to this negation effect. However, Focus Force is also a 2800 ATK beatstick, which partially compensates for the limited effect. Overall, Focus Force is a card best used in the side deck for those occasions where your opponent has high level effect monsters as the focus, such as Chaos Dragons or Hieratic decks.

Just edited my old answer. Also, ^^^^^ I pulled a number 25 in my first Galactic Overdrive. Pretty damn difficult to summon cos it needs to level 6s, but I managed it. Once.

1. CardCar D - Amazing card can go well in any deck, open up with it, set some traps for some support, play CardCar D, sacrafice it, go to end phase draw 2, BAM! already have card advantage

2. Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon - I love this card, it goes in very well with chaos dragon decks, with a red eyes DMD and white stone of legend combo. Got it out many of times with ease and it is a game changer card.

3. Night Beam - This card is just amazing in any deck, run 3 night beam and 3 mystical space typhoon and of course heavy storm and you pretty much have control of back field.

4. Hieratic Dragon King of Atum - The main staple in any hieratic deck. You swarm the field so easily with this card.

5. Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger - The other main staple in any hieratic deck, overlay into Atum, and then use Atum to overlay Thunder Charger, I have OTK'd many people with this combo.

First off, I'd like to note that if anyone disagree's with these following opinions, they are well-entitled to their own xD.

Second, I'd like to note that after severe scrutiny of Galactic overlord's cards, I feel entitled to note that I was not overtly impressed with any of the cards.
There were effects that interested me, but nothing stood out overall except 1 card. However, I have decided on the four other cards that I consider worth taking a look at.

TardyOrc - I'd like to make it clear that I am not a big fan of this card overall, I've never been a big fan of the penalized lower level monsters like Goblin attack force and Giant Orc, however I cannot deny that they are useful in their own ways. Breaking it down, Tardy Orc is a lvl 4 monster with 2200 atk and 0 defense, much like it's brethren, however unlike the others, it is not changed to defense mode after it attacks which is definitely a bonus, it's limitation is simply that it cannot attack the turn it's normal summoned, this hardly matters if it was summoned on the first turn. (Slightly off topic but perhaps relating later: I have noticed that with changes to the game, the basics that people clung to in the past have changed somewhat. During most of my time dueling, if you were going first, a very common move was to set a monster and generally a single trap or even a spell and end. Why? Because it made you feel safe, a set monster meant you would take no damage against the threats your opponent tossed out and a hidden trap or bluff spell made your opponent feel uneasy and hesitant. With Cards like Dark World Lightning, Night Beam and other cards, this is no longer the truth, your field is exposed instantly and you left open to massive damage due to so many cards that your opponent could have built their deck with, in a moment you are swarmed and it's a one turn kill and you are left feeling confused and ashamed. So now, people play aggressively, tossing out as much as they can to prevent your turn from meaning much, not that they can't be wiped out, it just might take a little more effort or...less depending xD.) Anyway, TardyOrc's power lies in just that, his attack points, a 2200 beat stick that your opponent will want to get rid of. Not saying it's a great plan, but if they waste a combo killing it, your bigger friends might come out, and playing him on turn one puts you up not just a heavy hitter, but a good blocker, you won't take nearly as much lp damage as you may have otherwise. All hypothesized of course. Besides that, he's pretty much fodder for Allure of Darkness
Black Luster Soldier EOE and Chaos Sorcerer.

Against Current Metagame: Not too much capability besides being a beat stick. Easily Splashable in most decks

Cardcar D - Okay, I don't like the look of this card, I think it's a silly car and it's main goal is apparently to come out of the gate, crash into a wall and get taken to the scrap yard but, thankfully you had insurance and that wall wasn't supposed to be there, so you get your money back plus a little more. This card is alot slower now though and if you are not careful, it's no more useful than a Hotwheel's toy.
I like any card that even's out, Jar of Greed 1 for 1, Moray of Greed 3 for 3, Pot of Duality 1 for 1+ you get to pick. So of course, this card is obviously useful, why? Because it's 1 for 2. That silly little Pontiac just became a Camaro and a Mustang, potentially more (Too much Car shpill?). Any card that replaces itself is good, a card that does more than that is wonderful. However, with priority being sent off like the bad little child it was, it's not as good as it could have been, well I say that But then you look at the darn rabbit and realize, it's still a pain in the unmentionables D<. While it can't be special summoned, you can always get it back with Monster Reincarnation and it's ilk (Course, I hope you are giving up something reasonable to make that move).

Against Current Metagame:Easily splashable in most decks, Card advantage +1, nothing really specific, but isn't that what makes them grand? XD

Nightbeam - Well, I see no overall negative to this card, it does what it's made to do, pick a target and take it out without any resistance, a sniper taking aim and firing pretty much. It's no mystical space typhoon that's for sure but sometimes it's nice to know you can take out your mark without it turning into a bomb that blows up in your face (No sense for a sniper D<). There are many cards that you want to destroy that your opponent may be waiting to activate until they know how things are going to go down. However when comparing it to the typhoon I give this card....a 5....out of 10. (End Credits.)

Against Current Metagame: As noted, nothing specific and that's what makes it grand, Dark deal hates it though. Easy to splash

Dimension Slice - Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite cards in the entire set, it's very easy to use as special summons are so common now and banishing is one
of the few ways to get rid of some of these reoccurring headaches, not that they can't come back. Not to mention you can activate it the turn you set it if you special summon an xyz, which, from what I can tell is pretty damn easy, so that means it's less likely to be destroyed....Compared to other cards. You annoyed by a monster that can't be destroyed? No problem, Grapha keep coming back? Not anymore! In some cases, this leaves you an open field to attack with a potentially powerful monster. I love you Dimension slice (When everyone special summons... Are they really special anymore?).

Against Current Metagame: Great Card against some Dark World Tyrants or at the very least, no worse than some others. Easy to splash in almost all decks.

Okay, I was kind of Torn on this last card, I wanted to avoid Hieratics and Evol's when I made this, something that doesn't rely soley on it's archetype. This card has
some benefits but...Not surprising, I don't care too much for it.

Photon Bouncer- FIRST and most important to note... THIS IS A RANK 6 Xyz monster, that might not sound like much to discredit this card to some of you, but
I promise you, this will be much more difficult to get out there then your casual 3's and 4's. On a side note, it's a pretty good card once out, with a 2700 atk points
it's a heavy hitter for most. Next, It's effect... This monster prevents the activation of effects and burns the opponent for it, it's limited to once per turn and two times only, unless you mix in some XYZ rebirth, Overlay regenerate and other cards. I think there are plenty of other cards that can help with that matter better than this card. However, you may have been able to prevent that sneaky rabbit from causing trouble, or maybe a newly summoned inzector, it's like telling a child no, he'll get it at first, but he'll probably try it again. Besides that, it's a light monster, lots of support for that.

Against Current Metagame: Has it's uses, not easy to splash in place of most cards, but your opponent will be alot more careful with their turn if he's saying hi.

Well, that's my Opinion anyway....

Number 25: Force Focus
Playing against a Stardust Dragon? No Problem! A Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon? No Fret! Dark Armed? You're all right! Why? Because of the blinding flashes of our new friend, Force Focus!Yep, He is a Rank 6 monster, which may sound difficult to summon at first, but today's metagame has all kinds of decks that can summon it, including the famous Chaos Dragon Deck! His main feature ,though, is that he can negate a enemy monster's effect just by detaching an Overlay Unit! Better yet, this effect can activate on either player's turn, making Focus able to stop pesky cards like Chaos Sorcerer from banishing your ace monsters that easily! To put a cherry on top, this mighty camera has a grand total of 2800 ATK, making it a match for even the powerful Red-eyes Darkness Metal Dragon! With all this potential, I'm sure that this machine will rock the metagame big time!

Queen Dragun Djinn
The Queen of Dragons is even better than King Dragun! Why? Well first, she's an Xyz Monster making her easy to summon in any Dragon Deck. Second, She's a Rank 4, making her (on some occasions) easier to summon than Focus! Also her first special ability makes dragon immune to destruction in battle, Helping u stall in a tight spot. Finally, her special ability allows her to special summon a Level 5 or higher dragon type monster each turn, making her perfect for further xyz summons, including the heavy-hitting Gustav Max, or for generating tributes for the devastating Light and Darkness Dragon! as you can see she's also a staple for dragon decks that have LaD Dragon.

Hieratic Dragon King of Atum
Just like Queen Dragun, he is perfect for Dragon decks that rely on LaD Dragon or Xyz summoning. However, he is a much more better option, as he requires 2 level 6 monsters, which are easier to come by in dragon decks than level 4's. The only downside is that the monster's attack is 0. However, it gets to keep its effect so you can summon Darkness metal and be able to summon a dragon that CAN attack!

Photon Streak Bounzer
Another good option for a Dragon deck as he can negate activated effects plus deal a brutal 1000 points of damage. Compared to Force Focus, It has advantages and disadvantages, as its Burn effect can severely hit enemy's LP, but it fails to deal with monsters who cannot be destroyed by battle.

Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger
This Card is virtually a Chaos Number for any rank 5 and 6 xyzs, and it works extremely well in Dragon decks as it can replace the above xyz monsters except Queen Dragun (though Force Focus is also not recommended) when they have no other overlay units. Its piercing effect is extremely useful against cards like spirit reaper.

In conclusion, all these Xyz monsters are good with Dragons, so I know that this deck will bring a revolution to Dragon Decks pretty soon!
