LESSON 35

Forms of Special Summoning

I would say that most of you had to learn the hard way on how to negate Gorz the Emissary of Darkness from invading the field and potentially costing you the duel. With it being my first lesson I won't ask much of you all but this: Describe the differences between an inherent special summon and a summon by effect. Make sure to go as far as why some cards can't negate a Special Summon while others can.

Finally, explain why Black Horn of Heaven cannot negate the Special Summoning of Gorz the Emissary of Darkness.

Da hax is Inherent Special Summon...
In Yu-Gi-Oh!, there are two kinds of Summon.
1.
A. Built-In Summon
A built in summon is a summon through a special way that doesn't start a chain. Synchro-Summon, Xyz-Summon, "Contact-Fusion", Chaos Sorcerer's Initial Summon, etc. falls into this group.
In a card written with PSCT, this kind of summon will be written by a bracket explaining (from where) it can be summoned, and without ";" or ":".
Because Built-In Summon doesn't start a chain, that means you can't chaining an effect to it. To cancel this kind of summon the only thing you can do is to negate it using an effect that actually negate summon like "Black Horn of Heaven/TKRO" in a specific window called "Summoning-Negation Window".

B. Special Summon by Card-Effect
In TCG, this kind of Special Summon could never be negated because when a chain is resolving, both player isn't allowed to activate any card until the entire chain has finished resolving and this kind of summon always happens during resolution of a chain.
For example: you can't negate a summon through "Monster Reborn" with "Black Horn of Heaven" because Monster Reborn hasn't finished resolving until the targeted monster is actually summoned. And when Monster Reborn has finished resolving the Monster is already summoned so there's nothing to be negated any more.
However, while this summon can't be negated, it can be cancelled by negating the card/effect, or placing the would be summoned to some other place (i.e: D.D. Crow the targeted monster).

2. Following 1B, even by Solemn Warning, Gorz's Special Summon can't be negated either, because until Gorz is summoned its effect hasn't finished resolving. However, it's possible to chain Solemn Warning to negate the activation of Gorz's effect.

3. Card that negate a summon.
Some cards can negate a summon and some other doesn't because card is only allowed to do what its text said.
for example, since solemn warning's text said it can negate a Summon, a Spell/Trap/Effect Monster's effect, then it can negate all of it.
In the other hand, Solemn Judgment only able to negate a Summon, a Spell and a Trap, thus it can't negate an Effect Monster's effect.

This is a table mentioning some popular cards showing what it can negate, following its text.
Card Name: Negate Summon?Negate Spell?Negate TrapNegate Effect Monster's Effect?
Solemn Warning:YesYesYesYes
Solemn JudgmentYesYesYesNo
Black Horn of Heaven/

inherent summon is basically xyz summon fusion summon synchro summon etc. thats why black horn cant negate gorz because its not a inherent summon its him using his effect to get special summon and the diffrence between inherent summon and effect special summon is inherent summon your summoning the monster properly effect special summon even though it is effective but its not a correct summon and solemn warning on the other hand can negate the summon of gorz because it negates any type of summon inherent summon eff special summon normal summon etc.

Kot0- The answer was ehh. I would've liked for you to go a little deeper on what made inherent and Effect SS so distinct.

HyawehHoshikawa- Very well thought out and that was the ideal answer. Solved.

100DP awarded.
