Race to Freedom Roleplay
"Gladiators of the colosseum! Today, I have a special announcement. You have each been granted 500 tokens to spend on whatever cards you please. You can collect them from the office building. But don't go spending them too soon! I've noticed a lack of enthusiasm with your dueling, and so I've decided to give you an incentive. The first one of you to acquire 10,000 tokens may buy their freedom. Feel free to duel wherever you like, the cameras are everywhere. Enjoy!"
In Race to Freedom, your character begins a gladiator, fighting for the currency of the arena, tokens, in order to source their next meal. After this announcement, however, food hardly registers as a reason to duel; you'll be spending your tokens on powerful cards to win more duels and eventually gain your freedom.
Each area that you can duel in may bring its own power to the field, but what might happen is anybody's guess. These mysterious conditions will affect how a duel is played and are completely unpredictable, so be on your toes! Absolutely anything is on the cards! For example, you could be about to duel in the garden, a place in which gladiators normally relax after a battle, only to see the plants surrounding you catch fire, causing unexpected changes to occur in a duel. To represent this, whenever you are about to duel someone in the roleplay, one of you must roll a six sided dice using dice jar. Each area has its own table, and the number you roll will cause a different condition to apply to your duel.
This example area effect table is from the arena.
Example Area Effect Table :
1 :
As you begin to duel, no announcement occurs, as you feared it might. It seems like this duel will be a perfectly normal one. Out of the corner of your eye you see a camera moving in to focus; they haven't forgotten about this duel, but they aren't making that big a deal of it.
2 :
You hear the sound of many mechanisms grinding together at once, and know for sure that something is about to happen. Lightning rods appear from the walls, and you jump away as a pillar of flame erupts from the ground in front of you. It looks like it will only get worse.
"Each turn, the turn player takes an amount of damage equal to 100 times the number of turns they have had."
3 :
The speaker system becomes active, but instead of an announcement, a painful screeching noise plays at excessive volume. No further explanation is given, but it seems to have driven your monsters into a frenzy.
"When a monster destroys another monster by battle, that monster gains 300 ATK."
4 :
The arena moves from its dormant state and opens up to reveal a crowd. You can immediately hear them chanting the word "blood", over and over. A familiar voice comes from the speakers:
"It would appear that the crowd want blood. Off with your armour, then."
"Both players will start with 6000 life points rather than 8000."
5 :
Before you could even shuffle your decks, an announcement from the speaker system echoes through the whole of the arena, and the area around you unfolds to reveal a crowd, all seated and waiting for your duel.
"It looks like we have a heated duel lined up for you here, ladies and gentlemen. But I'm sure we could heat it up a little more. Cheer them on, and watch their monsters fight to the death!"
The crowd begin screaming and roaring, and it seems to have an effect on the monsters in your deck.
"All monsters must attack, if able. During the End Phase, destroy all face-up Attack Position monsters the turn player controls, that did not declare an attack."
6 :
The second that the challenge is issued, the speaker system becomes active.
"I've been a little bored with the quality of dueling recently, and since you've so kindly decided to take your fight to the arena, I think I'll have a little fun."
"Roll 3 more dice on this table. Apply all results. Count duplicates, including any 6s, as a result of 1."
Aside from pooling your money to earn your freedom, you can also buy cards. Cards that you must buy are not available to begin with, but once bought can be used in the maximum number that the format allows. This is mostly to discourage use of the main decks of the format, such as HAT, and as such, many cards in meta decks will need to be bought before use. You can also wager cards in duels and sell them to either other players or back to the colosseum shop. Selling to the colosseum shop will always return half of the buying price, whereas when selling to other players it is possible to barter. Cards may also be given in special circumstances dictated by myself.
