An In-Depth Guide to the Fire Kings
Introduction
"Fire King" is another FIRE archetype that will be coming to the TCG in the Onslaught of the Fire Kings Structure Deck on February 3rd of 2013. It will feature Beast, Beast-Warrior, and Winged-Beast monsters. The deck is centered around keeping your field live while you keep your opponents field clean. The three Kings have effects that let them Special Summon themselves if another King falls to a card effect. The cards in the structure deck will flow with the cards that will be released in the Cosmo Blazar set. This article will cover: The four main Fire Kings, their two spell cards, and three support cards.
Fire King High Avatar Garunix
Effect:
Spoiler :
During the next Standby Phase after this card is destroyed by a card effect and sent to the Graveyard: Special Summon this card from the Graveyard. When you do: Destroy all other monsters on the field. When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 "Fire King" monster from your Deck, except "Fire King High Avatar Garunix."
Garunix is the boss monster of the Fire Kings. He is a level Eight Winged Beast monster with 2700 Attack and 1700 Defense. His main duty to the deck is to be destroyed by card effects and return the following turn to clear your opponent's monsters. This effect combos well with "Fire Kings' Fire Ring" and "Destruct Potion."
Fire King Avatar Barong
Effect:
Spoiler :
If a face-up "Fire King" monster you control is destroyed by a card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. During the next Standby Phase after this card is destroyed by a card effect and sent to the Graveyard: Add 1 "Fire King" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Fire King Avatar Barong".
Barong's is the main searcher of the deck. He is a Level Four Beast-Warrior monster with 1800 Attack and 200 Defense. His effect is not exclusive to just the "Fire King" monsters, but the spells as well. This can set someone to take command of any duel.
Fire King Avatar Yaksha
Effect:
Spoiler :
If a face-up "Fire King" monster you control is destroyed by a card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: You can destroy 1 card in your hand or on your field. This effect of "Fire King Avatar Yaksha" can only be activated once per turn.
Yaksha is the card that sets you up to start your Combos with Garunix. He is a level four Beast-Warrior monster with 1800 Attack and 200 Defense. The main thing that makes him so powerful is that effect can DESTROY a card in your HAND. That means Garunix would have been destroyed and can be Special Summoned in the following Standby Phase. There are many great combos with this card that will be discussed later.
Fire King Avatar Qilin
Effect:
Spoiler :
If a face-up "Fire King" monster you control is destroyed by a card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: Send 1 FIRE monster from your Deck to the Graveyard.
Qilin is the go-to card when your first play didn't work out as well hoped. He's a level Three Beat monster with 1000 Attack and 200 Defense. He doesn't play a prominent role in the deck, but can be very useful when needed.
On to the Spells....
Fire Kings' Fire Ring
Effect:
Spoiler :
Target 1 FIRE monster you control and 1 FIRE monster in your Graveyard; destroy the first monster, and if you do, Special Summon the second monster from your Graveyard. You can only activate 1 "Fire Kings' Fire Ring" per turn.
This card is viable to any "Fire King" deck. it can be so useful for many things. You can combo it with Yaksha to destroy Garunix from your hand and Special Summon a Barong from your graveyard. In the next Standby Phase you can Special Summon Garunix, which will destroy Barong, and then you can gain his effect next turn. This is all around a solid card.
Onslaught of the Fire Kings
Effect:
Spoiler :
If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 FIRE Beast/Beast-Warrior/Winged Beast-Type monster from your Deck, but its effects are negated and it will be destroyed during the End Phase. You can only activate 1 "Onslaught of the Fire Kings" per turn.
This card makes it okay for you to go second. Another advantage of this card is that it doesn't include just "Fire Kings," but ANY FIRE Beast/Beast-Warrior/Winged Beast-Type monster. You can go into Garunix or Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys, which can give you a huge advantage over the other player.
Support and Techs
The Following are cards that can make the "Fire King" Archetype ten times better;
Rekindling- Your Fire Kings are at 200 defense so that makes this card an excellent top deck late-game.
Flamvell Firedog- Excellent card to open with. you can destroy a face down monster and Special Summon any Fire King for a another attack and finish with a quick Xyz Summon.
Firedance-Tenki- It allows you to search for a Beast-Warrior monster, so why should Fire Fist have all the fun?
Destruct Potion- It saves your monster from getting hit by Bottomless Trap Hole and Dimensional Prison.
Enthusiastic Beastman Wolfberk- He's a quick Xyz Summon or can also be used to revive a "Fire King" so you can make a play.
Weaknesses of the Deck
With the deck focusing mainly on using the graveyard to make their plays, the biggest thing the deck falls to are removal cards like Dimensional Prison, Bottomless Trap Hole, Macro Cosmos, and Dimensional Fissure. The only counter to this would be to side in cards like Mystical Space Typhoon, Dust Tornado, and Imperial Iron Wall. The deck also tends to have trouble with the Dark World match up. Even though Grapha's effect would destroy Garunix, Grapha can keep recycling itself on to the field and having Gates on board makes 3000 Atk very difficult to get over. The best option for this would be to side in cards such as Bottomless Trap Hole and Dimensional Prison to get Grapha out of the game or to side in Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror to make sure Grapha can't revive himself back to the field.
Well Ladies and Gentlemen, I hoped this article was helpful for anyone exploring new archetypes or if you were just looking for a good read. Thanks for reading,
