Tiger of the Spell Speed 3

Featured Deck #1 Deck_by_otakucyrus-d4wg8vn

Today we’ll be looking at an interesting deck that Amy Cool has brought to the YCS. She calls it Tiger of the Spell Speed 3, and it is a hybrid Stun and Counter Fairy deck that, as of Round 5, has gone 3 – 2 in the competition. The deck is designed to shut down meta decks like Dino Rabbit, Inzektors and Wind-Ups that rely on low-ATK monsters to start up many of their combos by using King Tiger Wanghu. Meanwhile, she can keep the Tiger on the field for longer with the protection of her Counter Trap cards, which she helps to fund with Bountiful Artemis.

One of Amy’s keys to victory against the meta is the fact that her Counter Traps cannot be chained to unless the opponent also runs Counter Traps. This means she doesn’t have to worry about Dino Rabbit summoning Evolzar Laggia (if it even gets the chance with Wanghu around), because Laggia cannot negate Spell Speed 3 Counter Traps with its Spell Speed 2 effect! Her deck gets further rounded out with Divine Wrath, to negate all those nasty monster effects that most of the meta decks rely on. Of course, where Divine Wrath can be played, so can Van’Dalgyon, who can be used both as a 2800 ATK beatstick, and as a way to bring back monsters like Bountiful Artemis and Wanghu!

And don’t worry about consistency for her deck either! Amy Cool is not just relying on Artemis to draw into the cards she needs. She’s running Summoner Monk to ensure that she can bust out an Artemis, Rai-Oh, or Wanghu on command, and is using Maxx “C” to take advantage of her opponent’s speed. If her opponent slow plays a Maxx “C”, then she gets the longer game that she wants. If the opponent tries to drive through the Maxx “C”, she will be able to set a slew of Counter Traps on her next turn that can all but guarantee an impenetrable defense! In addition, the Monk can give Amy instant access to a rank 4 Xyz monster.

Amy’s main deck is just the tip of the iceberg. Many Counter Traps are only good against very specific decks, but that’s where her side deck comes into play! When Amy sees Inzektors she thinks “how about some Chain Disappearance to turn your bugs into juice?” Add in Black Horn of Heaven and Debunk, and she can respond to just about any deck that can be thrown her way.

All this is not to say that Amy’s deck is infallible and without weakness. Decks like T.G. and E Hero Beat that can just keep summoning strong beatsticks every turn can make her Wanghus worthless and cause her to waste her precious traps too quickly. Still, having a hard time with a couple deck-types is worthwhile if it means you can handle most of the meta with relative ease, right?

Well, here’s wishing good luck to Amy and her Tiger of the Spell Speed 3 deck! Hopefully we’ll see her in the Top 16!

I thought this deck was really neat. Wouldn't be surprised if Amy won the YCS.
