[Ed Corner] Getting Started Ed_cor10

Hello everybody. It’s your guide – Centrik. This article will be about the very basics of Yu-Gi-Oh! Before this article, I wrote an article about the origins of Yu-Gi-Oh! Check it out first so you won’t miss anything on your journey to become a great duelist!

What’s Yu-Gi-Oh?!

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese card game developed and published by Konami. In this game, two players will DUEL each other using Monster, Spell and Trap Cards combined together in order to defeat their opponent’s monsters and be the first to drop the other’s Life Points (LP) to 0. With lots of cards to choose from, you can create and customize your own Deck with your favorite cards to create your fantastic combos. Even if a card does not have enough power on its own, it can be powerful if it’s combined with other cards.

Note: This isn’t the only method to win the game. I will talk about the other win conditions in another article so please stay with me!

What You Need To Duel

Main Deck (40 – 60 cards):

In order to have a legal Main Deck. You must follow these rules:
1. Your Deck must be 40 to 60 cards.
2. You can’t have more than 3 copies of the same card in your Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck combined.
However, lots of cards tend to be too powerful that the Konami decided to either ban, limit or semi-limit those cards. Hence, the banlist was born. Cards that are “Forbidden” cannot be used in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, Side Deck. You can only have 1 copy maximum of a “Limited” card and 2 copies maximum of a “Semi-limited” card in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, Side Deck.
You can see the curren banlist here: http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/limited/

Tip: Try to keep your Deck close to the 40-card minimum. Having too many cards will clog your Deck and make it hard to draw your best cards to make best combos.

Extra Deck (0 – 15 cards):

This Deck consists of XYZ, Synchro and Fusion Monsters in any combination which can be summoned during the game if you meet certain requirements. I’ll talk about this in later article.

Side Deck (0 – 15 cards):

This is a separate Deck you can use to change your Deck during a Match. That means you won’t be able to use Side Deck if you only play a Single. After each Duel in a Match, you can swap any card from your Side Deck with a card from Main, Extra Deck to customize your strategy against your opponent. The number of cards in your Main, Extra, Side Deck before and after you swap any cards must be exactly the same.

Example: You’re using a Deck with 40 cards in Main Deck, 15 cards in Extra Deck and 15 cards in Side Deck and your opponent is using Karakuri. Luckily, your Side Deck contains 2 System Down’s. After the first game, you will swap 2 System Down’s with 2 cards from your Main Deck. It’s that easy. The Deck after being swapped needs to have the same amount of cards (40 cards in Main Deck, 15 cards in Extra Deck and 15 cards in Side Deck).

Code:

Pay 1000 LP; banish all Machine-Type monsters your opponent controls and in their Graveyard.

Other Things In The Game

Coin:

Some cards require a coin toss. Example: Time Wizard

[Ed Corner] Getting Started Latest?cb=20120922211933

Code:

Once per turn: You can toss a coin and call it. If you call it right, destroy all monsters your opponent controls. If you call it wrong, destroy as many monsters you control as possible, and if you do, take damage equal to half the total ATK those destroyed monsters had on the field.

Dice:

Some cards require a dice roll. Example: Number 85: Crazy Box

Code:

2 Level 4 monsters
This card cannot attack. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; roll a six-sided die and apply the result.
1: Halve your Life Points. 2: Draw 1 card.
3: Your opponent discards 1 card.
4: Negate the effects of 1 face-up card on the field, until the end of this turn.
5: Destroy 1 card on the field. 6: Destroy this card.

Counters:

Some cards require counters to keep track of things like the number of turns, card’s level, etc,…Example: Six Samurai United

[Ed Corner] Getting Started Latest?cb=20110724071456

Code:

Each time a "Six Samurai" monster(s) is Normal or Special Summoned, place 1 Bushido Counter on this card (max. 2). You can send this card to the Graveyard; draw 1 card for each Bushido Counter on this card.

Monster Tokens:

Tokens are used to represent monsters that can be created by card effects. Example: Radian, the Multidimensional Kaiju

[Ed Corner] Getting Started Tumblr_o0dwvg4A0T1rie4kjo1_r1_400

Code:

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) to your opponent's side of the field in Attack Position, by Tributing 1 monster they control. If your opponent controls a "Kaiju" monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in Attack Position. You can only control 1 "Kaiju" monster. Once per turn: You can remove 2 Kaiju Counters from anywhere on the field; Special Summon 1 "Radian Token" (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 7/ATK 2800/DEF 0), but it cannot be used as a Synchro Material.

Now you have known what to do. It's time to build your own Deck! Thanks for reading! Wish you had good luck on the way of becoming a great duelist!
