What I like to do:
Blur the layer, set its opacity to 50%. Take your eraser and set its opacity to 40% and erase what you don't want blurred.

Then new layer, sharpen. Set to 50% opacity, erase what you don't want sharp.

Or he could manually add Blur and Sharpen effects with their respective tools for more accurate effects.

50% sharpen too much tho, around 30/35 is perfect imo

or have it around 10% and click multiple times for more control

i use smart sharpening anyways but i thought i'd be a bit too much for him right now to use that one
