It never specifies WHERE it's to be summoned from. We assumed from the hand, but is it possible to activate the effect and summon him from anywhere else?

is common sense you gotta special summon it from hand
and if is proper summon you may special it from grave by card like monster reborn, or call of haunted

Same goes for all monster with the power to Special Summon themselves straight to the field, it is implied that they can only be Special Summoned to the field with their effect from your hand. Therefore, you cannot Special Summon cards like Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning with their effect from the graveyard.

Additional Comment:
You might not know it, but if Judgment Dragon can be summoned so nonchalantly from deck/graveyard/banished pile just by having 4 lightsworn monster in the graveyard, the only deck existing in yugioh would mostlikely only Dimensional/Macro deck.

Also summoning BLS-EOTB via its summoning condition isn't an effect, and it doesn't activate.

Most built in summons don't happen in the graveyard, that was a good hint anyway. Like it already said above me, it'll now say from your hand and from your graveyard. Be sure to learn PSCT, cause now you can easily see if it starts a chain link or not.

Once summoned successfully (Not Negated) you can use special summon it from the graveyard with other card effects, but if it is negated, BLS can't be special summoned from the grave with any means.

BLS-EOTB can only be special from the hand because it dose NOT specify where it can be summoned from by its own effect

so in short monster the can SS themselves but don't state where they can be SS from can only be SS from the hand

HOWEVER monsters that do state where they can be SS from (like higher versions of yubel) can be SS from where ever the card states it can

BLS can be spcial summoned only from hand. If summoned properly and destroyed you can summon him with cards like monster reborn. If his summon is negated you cant special summon him from grave or other place like that :D Also if he is returned to hand from grave thanks to spell like monster reincarnation he can be summoned again with his effect only.

To answer your question, although others have done the same but didnt explained as to why is has to be done that way ( and no other possible ways ).

BLS is a semi-nomi monster. This term means that is has to succesfully special summoned via the criteria mentioned on the card itself ( in this case removing a light and dark monster from your grave from play ) before it can be special summoned via revival cards or monster effects.

Semi-Nomi monsters that are commonly played at this moment:

Chaos Sorcerer
Synchro Monsters ( unless if the card specifically specifies that it can only be synchro summoned )
XYZ monsters ( unless if the card specifiaclly specifies that it needs to be exceeded )

i believe he was asking if BLS couls be SS from the grave by his own eff because it doesent say where it can be summoned from i believe that was what he was asking
