Card of the Week #18: A Major Upset

Card of the Week #18 AMajorUpsetANPR-EN-C-UE

So your first questions after seeing the chosen card have already been answered. I imagine you were wondering what the hell Upset was, what it does, and why it merits being the Card of the Week. Well, it's quite an old card with a great deal of potential in any deck that runs Level 2 or lower monsters.

Naturally, this is the perfect card for low Level decks to get even with Synchros, E-drags, and many other decks. However, since it is not always useful, it would take its main place on the side dedk. However, it is noteworthy that almost every deck in the current format uses Synchros, and this card works as a direct counter to all high-Level ones.

As a Trap card which requires the tribute of a Level 2 or lower monster, it is clear that it would be a nice tech or Side Deck card for Frogs. Frogs rarely go for higher levels than 7 (other than LADD OR Obelisk), and are packed with low Level monsters. If your opponent sees your face-up attack position Poison Draw Frog and thinks "I can OTK this mug", you can simply deny their OTK, for which they lulled themself into a false sense of security by summoning Stardust or a similar monster. The only problem is that Poison Draw can miss timing, meaning you won't get a draw after using Upset, but you can't win 'em all.

As DA's resident Ojamaster, it would be wrong of me not to mention my favourite Archetype where it would be relevant. Ojamas are all Level 2, and their main weakness is against particularly fast decks like Karakuris or E-drags. It would be very funny, however, to bounce an opponent's full field of Synchros or E-drags to Extra Deck or hand when they expected to OTK. This means the card has an incredible potential as a Side Deck card, and will undoubtedly help win games 2 and 3 against the faster decks of the format.

Perhaps most interesting is that most decks in the format could theoretically run this, as most people run Effect Veiler, but it wouldn't be very consistent. While a dead card without a Level 1 or 2 monster, it can be absolutely devastating to an opponent who thought they had protection. The only things that can stop monsters being bounced to hand are becoming unnaffected by card effects and preventing the targetting, and guess what this card doesn't do? Yes, that's right, it doesn't target. This card is guaranteed removal of all Level 7 or higher cards on the field, making it an almost unstoppable situational nuke. In other words, unless you can stop your card being affected by card effects or negate Upset, then your monsters get bounced away. Forbidden Lance will only protect one of them, and since it lowers ATK it might not even save that one. There is simply so little you can do about the card.

Essentially, its best use is as an anti-Synchro Side Deck card, and in this fornat it also works quite nicely against the meta of E-drags, as you can return their monsters back to the hand before they can Xyz but after they have used the effects once. Considering the meta this format appears to be primarily E-drags with a bit of Karakuri, and more specific to DA a number of Zombie and Blackwing decks, it's a wonder this card hasn't made it into some Side Decks sooner. The card is a brilliant counter to a majority of the metagame, and so, in conclusion, it is an excllent Side Deck card for the current banlist.

Card IS good, but it doesn't work on Xyz monsters. If it would work, Dracossack and Big Eye will no longer be a problem Smile

You could use it before they Xyz summon, although that isn't always ideal. Then again, even E-drags will be delayed a turn, and some decks may have difficulty summoning 2 Level 7s again.
