What exactly is a render? And does the pic have to be colour or can itnbe b&w?

A render is an image without a background. i.e. my avi is a render

and it can be in black and white

You reckon you could make a sig with this?

P.S. I think it would help if explained what a render is, as well as an example of one in the Intro. It would help those who do not know what a render is, as well as save up space. :D
