I don't use PS (cause i can't get it) and I make pretty decent stuff so screw some of these guys -_- Idk what's gimp but there's a few things you need to figure out.
1. How to mask a layer. When you do start using more than just white and black to change the opacity(effect) of the layer you have that isn't a background so it can blend in.
2. Make sure if you are copying and pasting a selected part of an image (even if it's a render) to have feet if it's a person, have the full wings if it's a dragon or if it's not too big, crop it so it doesn't seem obvious that the top of the head if missing. Your pic in front of the background takes too much space, has no full image to it, so i would pic something that fits better.
3. Learn how to control the contrast. Even if you are just sliding a bar that says brightness, it's better than just overlapping images. Check out the layer options you have and see what works and if they don't then get creative. Control image composition by putting the layer on first, selecting the layer, then edit the brightness and color saturation to a point that it looks just right. It would also help if you edit the background before doing this so you have a feeling on how you want to edit the layer you are adding.
Hope this helped
if you need a better explanation tell me what u didn't get
Practice makes perfect.
