Question about Number Cards?

Is it true only a number card can beat a number card? Me and my friend were dueling, and he used Utopia to attack Great Shogun Shien. Of course, they have the same attack, but he said that Utopia isn't defeated because he's a number card and Shien isn't. Having borrowed my other friend's Utopia for that duel, I realized it didn't say this on the card. I told him that, and he told me it was a secret ability. I told him there aren't any secret abilities, only in the anime, and he said I was wrong. I told him it wouldn't be fair if a card had a secret ability because then anyone could lie and say that a certain card had an ability. He said that he could still use the number card's secret ability because everyone knew what it was. I tried to tell him this wasn't true by google searching it, and 2 out of 2 people said it was only in the anime. He said they were wrong and were jealous of the number cards. So, could one of you settle this argument, possibly with proof?

No, that's only in the TV show. In the actual game, it does not apply.

ACG (Anime Card Game) and TCG/OCG (Trading Card Game/Official Card Game) rules are very different. Reason being that it's the anime and they can do whatever they want with it to make it seem more interesting.

It's not even just the rules, it's the effects man.

In the anime, the "Numbers can only be destroyed in battle by another Number" is actually part of the effect. That effect is applied to every single Number Card, BUT, because it is an effect, it can be negated.
I know that part because I think that's how Shark beat Yuma's #39 with Black Ray Lancer (since it negated Utopia's effect).

Effects are only a part of the game if it is written on the card.
So unless your friend is hooked up with friends at Konami that print anime versions of cards for giggles, he's playing the game wrong.
