PIPER CHAOS
Hello
loyal viewers and followers! This is your cat-pain speaking! We're
going to go on a little trip to the land of the Mystic Pipers! In case
of emergency, the exits are here (alt+f4), here (ctrl+q), and here (alt
--> x). Please keep you hands and arms inside, and your eyes glued
to the article until it has come to a full and complete stop!
So
yeah, let's do this. There was a deck that I took an interest in after
seeing it catapult itself to the Top 4 of the recent Yugioh Championship
Series - Long Beach, CA. The deck was run by Gabriel Perez and he
called it Piper Chaos. Let's take a look at some of the key cards of
the deck and why it faired so well in competition!
Mystic Piper
You
can Tribute this card to draw and reveal 1 card. If that card is a
Level 1 Monster Card, draw 1 more card. The effect of "Mystic Piper" can
only be activated once per turn.
Kinka-Byo
This
card cannot be Special Summoned. This card returns to its owner's hand
during the End Phase of the turn it is Normal Summoned or flipped
face-up. When this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up, you can
Special Summon 1 Level 1 monster from your Graveyard. When this card is
removed from the field, remove from play that monster.
Chaos Sorcerer
Cannot
be Normal Summoned or Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your
hand) by banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard. Once
per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster on the field; banish that
target. This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this
effect.
The strategy
is this, we'll be using level 1 monsters to get that extra draw power
out of Mystic Piper. All of our big guns (Chaos Sorcerer, Black Luster
Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Meklord Emperor Wisel, and potentially
Lightpulsar Dragon) are special summons. That means we can use up our
normal summon on kinka-byo, who will most often be special summoning
Mystic Piper from the grave, who will immediately be tributed for his
effect to net us a free 1-2 cards EVERY TURN. Kinka-Byo is an ideal
candidate for Creature Swap (although any of your level 1 monsters will
do). Summon Kinka-Byo, bring back Piper, tribute and draw, then Swap
out Kinka-Byo for 1 of your opponent's monsters. During the End Phase,
he'll still return to your hand from your opponent's side of the field.
;D
Now, if you're into OTK's and big sweeping pushes ... well
this deck is probably not for you. Instead, you'll be controlling the
duel with 3 copies of Mystical Space Typhoon mained, and a whole slew of
traps. The idea is to get to those key control cards quickly with your
extra 1-2 draws every turn, and then just wear down your opponent with
some well-timed trading.
Now, not to belittle the main deck, but
the way this baby operates its a matter of just trying to defend against
everything with the main deck. It's the side deck where Piper Chaos
truly shines! Since you'll be drawing so much, and since you'll be
having so many +1's or potentially +2's, and since we want level 1
monsters anyway, the side deck can put at 3's some cards that just rock
against many deck-types but that most decks can't afford to "max out"
on. These include:
Effect Veiler
D.D. Crow
Battle Fader
Cyber Valley
Effect
Veiler is just known awesome against most of the meta. Any deck that
use a lot of monster effects will fall prey to it, as it can shut down
many loops and combos before they have a chance to get off the ground.
D.D. Crow does the same for any deck that tosses monsters in the
graveyard just to summon them back. Wait for the opponent to try to
revive a monster and then chain the Crow to that effect to make your
opponent waste a card effect! Battle Fader and Cyber Valley do a good
job of standing up against most of the OTK decks around, and Cyber
Valley can also take out any Cyber Dragon your opponent may leave out
for you to snatch up into a Chimeratech. Of course, all these monsters
are either LIGHT or DARK too, which makes them targets for Black Luster
Soldier and Chaos Sorcerer. Isn't synergy wonderful?
So, now
that you've got a good idea of what the deck is capable of, let's take a
look at my version of this deck and I'll explain some of my personal
picks of interest...
Piper Chaos:
Monsters: 22
1x Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning
3x Chaos Sorcerer
2x Cyber Valley
1x D.D. Crow
2x Effect Veiler
1x Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
3x Kinka-Byo
2x Meklord Emperor Wisel
3x Mystic Piper
1x Sangan
3x Tour Guide From the Underworld
Spells: 11
3x Creature Swap
1x Dark Hole
1x Heavy Storm
1x Monster Reborn
3x Mystical Space Typhoon
1x One for One
1x Pot of Avarice
Traps: 7
2x Bottomless Trap Hole
1x Dimensional Prison
1x Solemn Judgment
2x Solemn Warning
1x Torrential Tribute
Side: 15
2x Battle Fader
2x D.D. Crow
1x Effect Veiler
1x Meklord Emperor Wisel
2x Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
2x Snowman Eater
1x Burial from a Different Dimension
1x Pot of Duality
1x Dimensional Prison
1x Mirror Force
1x Torrential Tribute
Extra: 15
1x Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
2x Armory Arm
1x Black Rose Dragon
1x Colossal Fighter
1x Dark End Dragon
1x Formula Synchron
1x Red Dragon Archfiend
1x Stardust Dragon
2x Leviair the Sea Dragon
1x Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
1x Photon Streak Bounzer
2x Wind-Up Zenmaines
So,
first off we can see that I'm using Wisel in this deck, and why not?
He's level 1, DARK, a 2500 ATK beatstick, and he has 2 very nice
effects. If my opponent isn't running a particularly "destroy" heavy
deck, I'll typically just side out 1 of them, since I can still Dark
Hole or Torrential Tribute my own monster to summon him if need be.
Sangan
is a great choice for the deck since he can search out nearly every
monster, which means more access to Piper and Kinka-Byo, and since I'm
running Sangan, Tour Guide is a lovely choice to get me some more access
to solid beatsticks or extra defense (from Zenmaines).
2 Rykos
and 2 Snowman Eater means additional safety in those ever popular Dino
Rabbit fights. Having 3 Effect Veiler helps too. Burial is just sided
in case of Macro decks and the like (although most of the time since
there's 3x Space Typhoon you don't have to worry about those effects
being active for too long). The deck in and of itself doesn't really
need Burial mained to operate efficiently. After all, you only have a
grand total of 4 cards that need to banish monsters from the graveyard,
and since most of your monsters are immune to Bottomless Trap Hole,
there are a limited number of ways for your opponent to banish them
otherwise without siding for most decks.
I think the rest is
pretty self-explanatory, so there you have it! It's the Piper Chaos
deck! Now, go make whatever changes you like and make one for yourself.
=)
The article has now landed in Mystic Piper land. Please
collect your belongings and leave the article in an orderly fashion. As
your cat-pain, it has been a pleasure having you aboard and I hope you
enjoyed your article!
