Today, we'll be taking a quick look at the deck that has brought MUFC to the Top 16 of YCS DA. He's been running X-Sabers in this tournament and managed to win 3 matches in the Swiss Rounds along with his tiebreaker duel to obtain his spot in the Top 16. At a glance, let's take a look at what has allowed him to play this deck so well. As with most X-Saber decks, the deck itself is often unforgiving in the amount of techs you can play without messing up the archetype too much, but MUFC has put his own spin on this deck in a few ways.

Looking at the monster lineup, the first thing to notice is that he is using a full 3 copies of Fullhelmknight and has not included any copies of Airbellum, probably due to the forbidden status of Rescue Cat. Along with the 2 copies of Pashuul and full 3 copies of Emmersblade it becomes obvious that his deck takes a slightly more defensive and careful approach to the Saber archetype. A sole copy of Super-Nimble Mega Hamster can give him quick access to Darksoul so that he can search out any of the other Saber monsters in his deck.

DA YCS Featured Decks 120px-SolemnWarningDREV-JP-C

MUFC capitalizes on the easy access to his 5 tuners with Mind Control, and is using 2 copies of Pot of Duality for even more draw power and searchability of the cards he needs for his combos. His trap lineup also coincides well with the more defensive feeling of his monster lineup as he includes 2 copies of Solemn Warning and Trap Stun, along with Solemn Judgment. All of this defensive play should allow his duels to go on for long enough that he can make excellent use of the full 3 copies of Gottoms Emergency Call that he's packing.

When asked why he chose to go with a Saber deck for this tournament, MUFC replied that he simply believes it to be the best archetype of the format. He especially enjoys playing Cold Wave (his favorite card), and following it up by summoning Boggart Knight to special summon Pashuul. The 2 monsters can then synchro summon Hyunlei to destroy up to 3 cards in his opponent's backrow, and his opponent can't chain any of his effects due to Cold Wave's effect. It's a very good way to punish any opponent who overextends his or her hand onto the field. Of course, if the opponent plays too safely, then Gottoms could end up punishing him or her by stripping a bunch of cards from his or her hand. It is these types of strategies that have given X-Sabers an edge ever since Absolute Powerforce brought Hyunlei into the Saber archetype.

DA YCS Featured Decks 120px-ColdWave-JP-Anime-5D

When asked what he had most expected to see in the tournament, he responded that Plant Synchro was the deck he was most prepared to face. If he could duel any person in the world, after a moment's contemplation he decided it would be Sam, another member of DA who nearly made the Top 16 also, but ended up losing his tiebreaker duel after winning 3 of his 5 Swiss Round matches.

So there you have it - MUFC's Top 16 X-Saber deck!

DA YCS Featured Decks 140

Next up in our look into the top decks of YCS DA, we have here Xae's Scrap deck. Xae managed to take this Scrap deck straight to the Top 16, skipping past the tiebreaker round after winning 4 of his 5 matches in the Swiss Rounds. Scrap monsters are 1 of the newest archetypes available in the game, and they focus on destroying themselves by the effects of other Scrap cards in order to add Scrap Chimera back to the hand, who can be continually abused to resummon Scrap Dragon or Scrap Archfiend again and again.

If Xae summons Scrap Chimera and has Scrap Beast in the graveyard, he can immediately summon Scrap Dragon, which has a sturdy 2800 ATK and 2 awesome effects. His 1st effect will let Xae destroy any 1 of his own cards on the field in order to destroy any 1 of his opponent's cards once per turn. If he destroys his own Dark Coffin, then he also receives the effect of Dark Coffin which will force his opponent either to discard a card or destroy a monster his opponent controls. Then, if his opponent is finally able to destroy Scrap Dragon, whether by battle or effect, Xae will get to special summon any Scrap monster from his graveyard. If that monster is in danger of being destroyed in the Battle Phase, he can summon Goblin or Beast in defense position in order to bring Chimera back to his hand if they are destroyed and set up for yet another Scrap Dragon.

DA YCS Featured Decks 140

His single copy of Scrap Golem can also allow him, once per turn, to bring back a Scrap monster from the grave and put it on either player's side of the field. This means he can use it for more attack power, for a better defense, or he can summon Goblin or Beast to his opponent's side of the field in defense position, then attack it and force it to activate its effect. Golem and Goblin can also be used to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon, as if Xae didn't already have enough ways to do that.

Looking at some of Xae's non-Scrap monsters, we can see Gravekeeper's Spy and Guard in the normal 2:1 layout. Along with giving him more non-tuner fodder for summons, the Gravekeeper monsters also give him access to Arcanite Magician, another powerful Synchro Monster. Summoner Monk can bring out Beast or Chimera, and with 17 spell cards in the deck, he should be easy enough to use. Additionally, with all the effects he has that destroys cards on his own side of the field, having Gorz around to protect him in case he ends up with a clear field just feels right.

DA YCS Featured Decks 120px-ScrapstormDREV-EN-SR-1E

Xae's spells and traps back up his strategy quite nicely too. Scrapstorm and Foolish Burial can prep for many of his big plays. If Scrapstorm targets and destroys Scrap Beast after sending Scrap Chimera to the graveyard, then Xae gets to draw a card and use Beast's effect to bring Chimera to his hand, which will be fully prepped to bring out Scrap Dragon. To further insure that he can get the monsters he needs, when he needs them, Xae is running 2 copies of Scrapyard, which allows him to search his deck for Beast or Goblin. As with any deck that runs 6 tuners, Mind Control is a nice and natural add-in.

Interestingly, the reason why Xae chose this archetype for YCS DA was because it is the same archetype he uses in real life, and he wanted to prove that he could bring this deck, which he made just after Duelist Revolution came out, a truly competitive and original deck that could win. In other words, this ain't your grandma's cookie cutter deck. His favorite combo that the deck produce is to use Scrapstorm with Scrap Beast. If the opponent attempts to use Bottomless Trap Hole or Dimensional Prison or anything else that could endanger Beast's place in the graveyard, Xae can simply chain Scrapstorm to that effect, which will allow him to send Scrap Chimera to the grave, draw a card, then destroy Beast and use its effect to bring Chimera back to his hand, all while nullifying the effect of the card that could've harmed Scrap Beast. That gives him a +1 card advantage and quick access to Scrap Dragon when he goes to summon that Scrap Chimera he got to his hand during the combo.

Xae made his Side Deck in expectation of seeing mostly Plant Synchro and Light Beatdown. He said he was quite surprised by the great diversity of the Top 16, and was especially impressed with Kira's Secret Village Deck (spoiler ;D ), but also says that despite his surprise he still feels like he can produce a strong finish in the tournament.

DA YCS Featured Decks 1200433787DestinyHeroDiskCommander

Xae's favorite card of all-time is Destiny Hero - Disk Commander, because he just loves gaining quick card advantage while also getting the extra speed of drawing through his deck to get to his most important cards as quickly as possible. When asked who in the world he would most like to duel, he responded that he has a lot of personal respect for Billy Brake, a real life duelist who has competed in several major tournaments and has always tended to do well, having made several Top 16 finishes. He said the reason he would most like to play Brake is because Brake is such a great player of meta decks, and Xae would like to compete with the best using the Scrap deck of his own design, which is still trying to find a niche in the game's current meta.

And there ya go - it's Xae's Top 16 Scrap Deck!

In this feature deck discussion, we'll be taking a look into a Gemini/Light Beatdown deck by Crow95. Crow95 used this deck to win his way through 3 of his 5 Swiss Round matches and then won his tiebreaker match to move himself into the Top 16. The main strategy of the deck is to be able to keep on summoning high ATK 4-star monsters while using Spells and Traps to destroy your opponent's monsters so that you can give consistent damage throughout the duel. If the duel reaches the late game, the deck is also capable of summoning Elemental Hero - Absolute Zero via Miracle Fusion in order to regain control of the field by wiping it out, or to simply fortify an already strong position with another 2500+ ATK beatstick with a scary effect.

This deck-type has been strong for some time now, but Crow95 has put some of his own personality into it. The most remarkable of which are his 3 mained copies of Snowman Eater and his mained copy of Legendary Jujitsu Master. These monsters take a deck that tends to be highly aggressive and gives it some extra defensive options if he ever begins to lose control over the field. It is also interesting that he uses a full 3 copies of Gemini Spark although he utilizes only 5 Gemini monsters (3 copies of Neos Alius and 2 copies of Crusader of Endymion). To make sure that he can always use Spark to its best ability, he is maining a full 3 copies of Pot of Duality, so he should be able to get to 1 of those 5 Geminis most of the time.

DA YCS Featured Decks Snowman_Eater_6399

In regards to his Side Deck, he has kept some normally mained cards such as Thunder King Rai-Oh and Doomcaliber Knight in there, perhaps to allow him to throw his opponent off in the 1st duel and then side into a more regular build if needed in the 2nd and 3rd duels. Since Gemini/Light Beatdown decks don't have any particularly radical weaknesses, he can afford to use this type of active siding to make slightly smaller changes to his deck between games in a match. According to crow95, the main pride of his side deck is his ability to side in both Dimensional Fissure and Skill Drain against decks that have a lot of graveyard usage or that rely heavily on monster effects. Having both sided in at once can give a drastically different feel to how his deck plays by moving only those 4 cards (plus another 2 if he chooses to put in Beastking Barbaros to compliment his Skill Drain). Since his own deck doesn't rely too heavily on either of those strategies, they are very safe for him to side in.

DA YCS Featured Decks T_YU_DCR049 DA YCS Featured Decks T_YU_EOJEN047

The reason Crow95 chose to run this deck was because he felt it was a Tier 1 deck that performs well against Sabers, Blackwings, and Gladiator Beasts. He also expected that he could potentially see Scraps, Debris Variants, Infernity, and other Light Beatdown decks. He was quite surprised both by Kira Amadeus' Secret Village deck, as well as the Flamvell deck ran by Ballin1521. Crow95's favorite combos for the deck are using Gemini Spark with Alius, and using his sided in Dimensional Fissure + Skill Drain lock.

DA YCS Featured Decks 180px-Trishula,DragonoftheIceBarrierDT08-JP-DUPR-DT

When prompted for a favorite card of all time, Crow95 said it was a hard decision, but finally went with Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier because of how some decks such as Debris variants can summon it quite easily, and because it gives an instant hand and field advantage. When asked who in the world he would most like to duel, Crow95 was adamant about Michael Gruener, the 2010 Brochim YCS Champion who won with X-Sabers against a field of 1300 contestants.

So there you have it - that is Crow95's Gemini/Light Beatdown deck!

DA YCS Featured Decks 122px-SecretVillageoftheSpellcastersCSOC-EN-SR-UE

Hello friends, today it is time for our final Feature Deck from YCS Duel Academy and so we'll be taking a look at a very original deck that surprised several people during the course of the tournament. This is Kira's Secret Village deck that got him to the Top 16 of YCS DA after winning him 3 of his 5 Swiss Round matches and his Tiebreaker duel.

DA YCS Featured Decks RP02-EN084_1130

Some of you older duelists may remember back in the day when people used to use things like the Horus LV8 / Jinzo / Royal Decree lockdown to stop your opponent from using any spell or trap cards. Well, this operates in a similar manner, except that Kira doesn't have to worry about any monsters like Jinzo or Horus that are difficult to summon. He can lock his opponent with Royal Decree, Secret Village of Spellcasters, and any Spellcaster monster - of whom he is packing 13. That's quite a few more than the number of Horus LV8's that were run in the past, and it means that if his opponent is going to beat him, he'll have to do it with monster effects.

DA YCS Featured Decks SDMA-EN019-2T

Since his opponent has to rely so heavily on his monsters, Kira has taken things a step further than the simple spell/trap lockdown and has added in several cards just to get rid of any pesky monsters his opponent may summon. He's packing extra copies of Gravekeeper's Spy and Guard, not only because they are Spellcasters, but because they can also be used with his single copy of Gravekeeper's Descendant to destroy annoying monsters that he can't get around. He's boasting many more monster destruction effects with copies of Ryko, Lightning Vortex, Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind, Honest, and Chaos Sorcerer, so no matter what his opponent summons to try to squeeze out of his lockdown, Kira can handle it readily.

Kira's deck actually doesn't have many really big combos, and that's just the way he likes it. The entire reason he chose this deck is because all it takes is Royal Decree, Secret Village, and any of his Spellcasters in order for him to take control of the duel. He likes that he doesn't have any need to summon some huge monster in order to win his duels, and says that it allows the deck to run very consistently when he doesn't have to worry about working up to something. He'll just consistently pound it out with his opponent while using his many monster destruction effects to get rid of any nuisances along the way.

DA YCS Featured Decks 138px-MagicCylinderYSDS-EN-C-1E

The decks Kira most expected to see at YCS Duel Academy included: Blackwings, Sabers, Gladiator Beasts, and Gadgets. When asked what his favorite card of all time was, he decided to be difficult and not give 1, instead he gave a few of his favorites that he couldn't choose from, such as Stardust Dragon, Monster Reborn, and Magic Cylinder. He said that if he could duel anyone in the world . . . well he thought about dueling the creator of the game, but thought that he might not necessarily be an awesome duelist (ummm....Maximillian Pegasus? j/k j/k), so he decided he would be happy dueling any of Itachi the Criminal, The White Knight, or nekofjung (because I am so pwnzor ;D, nah but I show my love).

So say hello to our final Featured Deck from YCS Duel Academy - Kira Amadeus' Secret Village deck!
