A Day at the Pond
A Day at the Pond DupeFrogCRMS-EN-C-1E

Hello my loyal fans! Ask and ye' shall receive! Today's article is all about those grown up tadpoles that show so much love to those who use them correctly. That's right, I'm talking about Frogs! Froggies, Froggies, and more Froggies. Specifically, I'm talking about tiny Frogs. No more are the days when Des Frog and D.3.S. Frog rule the Froggy deck. Now Frogs are less about the OTK and more about locking down your opponent to the point that the opponent rips out all of his/her hair and throws a temper tantrum so large as to make unborn babies cry. Let's take a look at what to expect from this article:

I. Intro to Frog Archetype
II. The Deck.
III. Further Explanation of Combos

------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Intro to Frog Archetype

In this section I'll be discussing many of the cards used in a Froggy deck as well as giving you some pointers on combos that they use. Let's do this.

A Day at the Pond Subs
So, this guy is 1 of the central figures in the deck. He allows you to "tribute" any monster you control to bring out a Frog from your deck. Note that this is a tribute, so he works with Soul Exchange. That will be important later. Also, take a big note that his effect is NOT "once per turn". You can use his effect as many times as you like, which means he combos very well with Pot of Avarice and Scapegoat. The last thing to note is that he can always tribute himself as well to bring out a Frog, which means you shouldn't feel scared summoning him with his only 100 ATK, because you can get rid of him whenever you like for a different monster.

Dupe Frog
100/2000/2-star
Aqua/Water
This card's name is treated as "Des Frog" while it is face-up on the field. Your opponent cannot select another monster as an attack target. When this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard, you can add 1 "Frog" monster except "Dupe Frog" or "Frog the Jam" from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand.

This is 1 of the other central figures of the deck. Having 2 Dupe Frogs on the field means your opponent cannot attack any of your monsters. Additionally, he can allow you to use Des Croaking if you have 3 of them on the field, and he can search out Frogs when "sent" from field to graveyard, meaning he doesn't have to be "destroyed" and he can be sent either by a card effect or through battle. An important ruling to note, however, is that his searching effect is optional (just like Poison Draw Frog), so you don't get to search if you tribute him for Substitoad since the last thing to happen was Substitoad summoning a Frog, and not Dupe going to the grave.

Unifrog
400/400/2-star
Aqua/Water
This card can attack your opponent directly. When this card successfully attacks directly, if you control a "Frog" monster other than "Frog the Jam" or "Unifrog", you can destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls.

This little guy is very interesting. He can attack directly, which means when Wetlands is on the field he is doing 1600 damage every turn. Additionally, when he successfully attacks directly he gets to destroy 1 of your opponent's spell or trap cards if you have another Frog on the field. This makes him a quick and easy +1 with field control. Don't worry about your opponent attacking him because you'll be locking your opponent with Dupe Frog most of the time.

Flip Flop Frog
500/200/2-star
Aqua/Water
Once per turn, you can flip this card into face-down Defense Position. When this card is flipped face-up, you can return monsters your opponent controls to their owners' hand up to the number of face-up "Frog" monsters you control, except "Frog the Jam".

So, your opponent is locked down with Dupe Frogs, but you're having trouble attacking over his big monsters? No problem at all says Flip Flop Frog. He can return 3 monsters your opponent controls to his/her hand if you already have a Dupe lock on the field. Then set him again with his effect in Main Phase 2. Your opponent can't attack him because he's locked down from Dupes. By himself he is also useful, because even if he is attacked and the only card on your field, you will still get to return 1 monster your opponent controls, and that can sometimes mean getting rid of an opponent's big synchro monster (including Stardust since Flip Flop doesn't destroy anything). Having 1700 ATK with Wetlands is just a bonus.

A Day at the Pond SOVR-EN034
Here is your primary beatstick and so much more. He has 2200 ATK with Wetlands, and is capable of performing some nice combos such as becoming fodder for Prime Material Dragon, or tossing cards in the grave like Treeborn Frog and prepping the grave for Pot of Avarice or Junk Synchron. He's the newest Frog in the group and easily replaces the old Submarine Frog who has a fairly worthless effect.

A Day at the Pond 172px-WetlandsLODT-EN-C-1E
So you think Froggies don't have enough ATK? All Frogs are Aqua/Water, and all Frogs in this deck are 2-star. They all get a 1200 ATK boost from this Field Spell which means trouble for your opponent.

A Day at the Pond SOVR-EN058
Didn't you know? The newer packs have now given Water decks a draw engine, and it's a damn fine one at that. Very sexy.

Froggy Forcefield
Normal Trap
Activate only when a face-up "Frog" monster you control, except "Frog the Jam", is selected as an attack target. Destroy all Attack Position monsters your opponent controls.

It's the Frog version of Mirror Force, Justi-Break, Wall of Thorns . . . etc. Not chainable, not useful against every deck. Not as useful when your opponent is already pinned down with a Dupe lock. Nonetheless, it's an awesome side deck card for the deck.

A Day at the Pond AegisoftheOceanDragonLordANPR_EN_C_1E
Chain it to Mirror Force, Dark Armed Dragon, Black Rose Dragon, Lightning Vortex. The point here, is that your opponent is locked down from attacking from Dupe Frogs. Now when your opponent tries to destroy them with effects, that also doesn't work at all. Your opponent is screwed.

III. Further Explanation of Combos

Well, after looking at this deck you may have questions about some (or even many) of the card choices in here that weren't properly explained in the 1st section of this article. Don't worry, I'll get right on it. Let's start with some of the monsters:

A Day at the Pond Primemat

Mother Grizzly and Sangan provide a means for searching out Substitoad earlier. Junk Synchron gives you access to Synchro monsters, giving the deck more options to deal with situations as they come up. He's an awesome card to top deck later in the duel. Treeborn Frog provides reusable fodder for Substitoad, and can also be used as extra Synchro materials or to help bring out Prime Material Dragon. Speaking of which, Prime Material Dragon is in here to reinforce the Dupe Frog lockdown in a way that is similar to what Aegis of the Ocean Dragon Lord does, but more long-term. Ignoring his anti-burn effect, his other effect lets you discard a card to negate any effect (be it a spell, trap, or monster effect) that would destroy a monster you control. It's another example of your opponent being both unable to attack and unable to destroy your monsters with effects. His 2400 ATK also makes him a good beatstick for the deck.

A Day at the Pond 180px-SoulExchangeCP04-EN-C-UE

On to the spell card lineup. Soul Exchange is an awesome card in this deck. Summon Substitoad, then use Soul Exchange. Tribute the targeted monster for Substitoad and bring out a Dupe Frog. Tribute Substitoad for his own effect and bring out a 2nd Dupe Frog. That's how easy it is to make that lock happen. Brain Control is another way of accomplishing this same feat, and both cards can alternatively be used to bring out Prime Material Dragon (that's called synergy dood). Pot of Avarice is another really big card for this deck. Not only does it let you re-use used up Substitoads, but it can be combo with Substitoad for immediate use whenever you want. Just have Substitoad and 1 other monster. Tribute the other monster with Substitoad's effect, then tribute the new Frog for Substitoad. Rinse and repeat until you have 5 monsters in the grave for Pot of Avarice. Simple, easy, effective. Salvage is another way to get back used up Substitoads. That means your ways of getting more chances to use Substitoad include Mother Grizzly, Sangan, Pot of Avarice, and Salvage. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding that key card. Scapegoat is another card that combos well with Substitoad. Use it at the end of your opponent's turn, then on your turn summon Substitoad and tribute all the tokens for 4 Frogs, 2 of which can be Dupe Frogs so that you have the lock. If you're running Des Croaking in your own version of Frogs you can summon 3 Dupe Frogs this way, or 2 and a Des Frog (however you like it) for immediate field clearing power with Des Croaking.

A Day at the Pond 046

The trap lineup here is somewhat self explanatory. Solemn is in here like with half the stuff in this deck, to reinforce the lock. You shouldn't have to worry about losing LP because your opponent shouldn't be able to attack often and Burn decks won't hurt you either because you have Prime Material Dragon. Mirror Force and Froggy Forcefield are sided, because unless your opponent has a lot of ways to break your lock, you will not have to deal very often with your opponent actually being able to attack.

A Day at the Pond 6545

There are couple noteworthy additions in the Extra deck that should catch your eye outside of the regular "staple" synchro monsters. Those are Sea Dragon Lord Gishilnodon and Junk Warrior. Both of these Synchro monsters work well with the low level monsters in the deck, and both are easily summoned via Junk Synchron.

A Day at the Pond 170px-ImperialIronWallSDZW-EN-C-1E

The side deck is mostly standard cards and I've already talked a few times about why Mirror Force and Froggy Forcefield are sided. The mirrors help you shut down BW's, TeleDAD, Zombies, LS, Chaos decks and whatever else uses LIGHT or DARK monsters. Kycoo is a meta breaker in this format and is awesome against many of the top decks. The same can be said of D.D. Crow. Imperial Iron Wall is a special precaution for Macro decks which can torment this deck and make Junk Synchron, Treeborn Frog, and Pot of Avarice all completely useless. It is also useful against Fortune Ladies, who have become popular with all their nice supports and their awesome draw engine capabilities.

Nice article but 1 thing.Dupe frog+Dupe frog is lock, but Substitoad + Dupe frog is lock too, so there isn't always need to tribute the substitoad.Substitoad protecs any frog and dupe frog's effect is that only it can be attacked, so your opponent cannot atk substitoad but only dupe and it can't be destoyed by battle due to substitoad xD
