"What, you little !@#$!!"
Quickly following that comment, Alaude was hurled into a wall. Somehow, while being smothered by the flurry of blows of the three thugs, he managed to signal to the little eight-year old girl to silently get away. Reluctantly with the droplets of sorrow smearing her cheeks, she fled. Smiling, Alaude gradually saw only darkness, thinking, "at least my life is of some worth," as his consciousness once again dived into the void.
Alaude opened his eyes. From what he could see, at least three hours had passed since he had taken that beating for the girl. The moment he saw, he could tell that the girl had talent as a duelist. But between the age gap and the exhaustion of dueling three people, she was doomed to lose to them. Not that the thugs gave her a chance of backing out of that match. When they finally demanded her deck, he couldn't remember anything besides driving a fist into the thug's ugly face. He chuckled. Long ago, his purpose would not have been to be a punching-bag in another's place but to be some hero of justice, defeating all the bad guys and getting all the girls. Heck, he back in the day, he might have even dreamed of joining this new-!@#$ tournament with the hope of becoming the King of Games. Funny how dreams never work out. Guess that's why they're dreams.
Groaning from bruise upon bruise that had grown upon his body, Alaude stood up to go home.
Suddenly, in a flash of light, Alaude was thrown back violently against the wall. Oh great, he thought, guess they're here with backup to finish me off. Alaude looked up, expecting an end to his pathetic life.
.....a card?
You have a strong fist, human.
"Woah, Woah now. Not only is there a shining, floating card, but Mr. Shining-floating card is talking to me?...man, I must have really taken a hit this time...better go home and rest..."
Is that how you wish to spend the rest of your life, human? Living in the shadow of others? As a weakling? A coward?
"Sure, if it will make you go away. It's my lot in life anyway. My fate."
Then deny your fate, human. Fight with me, like you fought for that girl. You are missing something. When the heroes of old sought something, they embarked on a quest. Journey with me, and find that which you lack.
With a harsh laugh of scorn, Alaude turned to go home...and yet. Something stirred within him. Something that had been dead...no, completely frozen over, but now perhaps slowly regaining consciousness.
"What are you, card?"
I am called Number 105: Burning Knuckler Star Cestus. And you, human?
My name...my name is...Alaude.
