Weekly Deck Review: Billy Brake's Rock Stun
Many
of you have heard of Billy Brake. For those that haven't, he could be
considered one of the best duelists in the present day. He is the man
who topped with Inzektors after Inzektor Hornet and Inzektor Dragonfly
had been limited. He is the man who had the idea of using Safe Zone in
Inzektors. He is also the man who won two YCSs with his Plant Synchro
Deck. Today I will be reviewing his Rock Stun Deck.

In terms of Rock Stun Decks, this deck could be considered one of
the best. However, it has a few flaws. Some of the flaws lie in the card
choices while others lie within the deck-type itself. In order to
better the deck, it is important that we first find what the decks major
weak points are. For Rock Stun, the major weakness is that it relies
heavily upon establishing field control and can have trouble creating
explosive plays. This means, if Rock Stun can establish it's field and
not allow the opponent to retaliate, the game is won. However, if the
opponent does retaliate, the deck has no way to stop him or her. Simply
put, Rock Stun has no boss monster or super card. However, there are two
major candidates to fill this spot. The first is Gaia Plate, the Earth
Giant and the second is Grandsoil the Elemental Lord.
Grandsoil
supposedly does not run well in Rock Stun because Rock Stun has no way
of controlling how many cards will be in the grave and is not very fast
in getting cards to the grave on top of that. However, assuming that we
run three block golems and two Gaia Plate, the Earth Giants, we would be
able to control the amount of earth monsters in the grave quite
adeptly. In fact, we could also add in a Gigantes to add to the aggro
style that said deck would have. Furthermore, if Grandsoil were in your
hand in the early game, you could liberally summon as many Rocks as you
want without worrying about the problems of Kao'ki Meiru Monsters
needing a rock to be shown.
Now
that the decks major weakness has been identified and the cards to fix
it have been chose, the next step is to find the correct amount of those
cards that should be run. In this case, the best idea would be to run
two Gaia Plate, the Earth Giants and one Grandsoil the Elemental Lord.
This is justifiable by the fact that the way that this deck banishes
would be similar to the way that Agents banish. By simply replacing Gaia
Plate with Master Hyperion and replacing Grandsoil the Elemental Lord
with Archlord Kristya, one can find a corollary. Why three and one? This
is based off the fact that Simon He used the same numbers in his Chaos
Agent deck for Master Hyperion and Archlord Krysta. The one on Grandsoil
can be accounted for by this fact; however, the deck does not have
nearly as much speed as Chaos Agents and so running three Gaia Plate
would be foolish. Rocks have no equivalent for Agent of Creation- Venus.
Next
is the problem of what to take out of the deck. The four weakest
monsters in the deck as towards the strategy would be Card Trooper and
Maxx "C". Card Trooper, although a good card in some decks, does not
work well in this deck because of the large spell and trap card count.
Using Card Trooper, it would be disheartening to lose Solemn Warning,
Dark Hole, and then a Kao'ki Meiru Sandman. Although it would be faster
to send them using Card Trooper, it would also be far less consistent.
It would be faster to either use Catapult Zone or to simply allow the
Kao'ki Meiru's and other rock types in the hand to go to the grave the
normal way. Maxx "C" on the other hand, is either sub-par or plain
useless in most match-ups excluding Wind-ups. It does not help much
against Heroes, Dark Worlds, Inzektors, or Atlanteans, decks which can
go a turn with no special summon. Furthermore, against decks which simply
have no special summoning like an ordinary Rock Stun, the card is
literally useless. Next, I will take one MST out of the main deck simply
because this deck does not fear backrow nearly enough to run all three
MSTs. I have also decided to take out both Soul Takers because although
it is a good one for one card, it is not nearly as good as Compulsory
Evacuation Device, my replacement for it, seeing as both Gachi Gachi
Gantestsu and Wind-up Zenmaighty have been seeing alot of play. Lastly, I
have decided to take out Starlight because Stardust Dragon messes up
the Block Golem plays. Of course, this also means I am taking out
Stardust, but Extra Deck fixes will come later in the article.
Now I have taken out eight cards and put in six, I must put two more
in. For those cards, I have chosen Gigantes and Skill Drain. I have
chosen Gigantes because it not only helps to add a little bit more
control over the grave for Grandsoil to work better but also works well
to control the field. If I ram Gigantes into a stronger monster, I can
clear the opponents backrow. This card connects both the aggro side of
this deck and the control side of the deck. I have chosen to put in Skill
Drain because when it is in play, this deck can be played as a Beat
Deck. Furthermore, it hurts top decks of the format such as Dino Rabbits
and Wind-ups.

Lastly,
The extra deck. The only changes I made to this are taking out one
Soul of Silver Mountain and Stardust Dragon. I took out Stardust because
not only does it conflict with Block Golem but it is also useless with
no Starlight Road. I took out Soul of Silver Mountain because where as
before the deck ran six level three earth types, it now only runs four
because I took out two Card Troopers. I put in two Gagaga Cowboy because
it did not exist at the time that Billy Brake ran the deck but mix well
with it.
